Small, but mighty. Kinda wide for a 5th pocket..

My wife bought a QSP Parrot v2 a while back and I so impressed with it, that I went looking for a QSP with similar features. (And price, it turns out) I tend to favor small knives that I can take just about anywhere and I want them to look mostly traditional or utilitarian. This is a great size for my tastes, and with a little lanyard it’s very easy to carry, find, and handle. The build and fit are solid and satisfying. This feels like a forever knife for toting in my pocket to just about anywhere except work. I’m told the blade steel is good for the price point, but I don’t have much long term experience with this aspect of knife handling. The denim makes a cool knife scale, but it picks up grease and dirt so easily that this is not one I’m carrying to my construction job. Since the build is almost the same as the Parrot, the body and scales add up to a similar width and this makes the Baby Penguin feel almost too chunky for its size…even though the Parrot seems to just feel like it fits nicely. Compared to my CRKT Squid and my Ontario Rat 2, both slimmer than the Baby Penguin and seem to come out of my pocket with less friction. Maybe I’m a cheapskate, but it was irritating to get the baby Penguin for almost twice the price of the Parrot. I say this knowing that if I was an ultimate cheapskate…I guess I would have just gotten a Parrot or Penguin in the full size and been happy with my $20 savings. We contain multitudes I suppose.
