Started fires using this and Chert and char cloth works great also started fires using it to strike sparks from a fero rod -its sharp edges help create good showers of sparks.Gets warm using it as a hand hold for a bow drill fire (it has a counter sunk hole for this) so I suggest you insulate your hand with handkerchief or shirt tail for comfort.Comes in a can storage which is great for making your char cloth-mines full -will be using this a lot thanks ESEE for a great product.

Multi Use Fire Tool

Have had mine for over a year now. Throws good sparks off of flint, chert, and quartz. Strikes a ferro rod well, and is a good bearing block for the bow drill. It's my go to now when I'm doing friction fire with a bow. I have a lot of other bearing blocks (stone, hardwoods, antler, bone, shell, etc) but none work as smoothly as this one. Can easily be worn around you neck, thrown on a carabiner, or carried in a tin. Solid tool, and fun to mess around with.

fire!

i don't know what kind of black magic esee engineered in this steel, but it's amazing. i have other steels that i've attempted to get sparks with and i've also attempted it with the spine of my carbon steel blades, but none of them worked like this. i actually thought i was doing something wrong before, but my first strike on this steel with a piece of flint produced a crazy shower of sparks. it wasn't the one or three little sparks you have to hope lands on your char cloth. it was a shower of sparks. i was able to easily ignite my char cloth and start a fire with this steel. very impressed. i also tested it out as a bearing block for a bow drill and it was excellent in the capacity as well. i haven't tried it out as a ferro rod striker yet, but i'm sure it will work fine. this thing it awesome and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone that is looking for a tool to aid in fire making.

Excellent bugout tool

I use the product with Ferrocerium rod. (Get the biggest you can find). Tool is good size and shape for producing fire. Fits well in the pocket and is large enough to last a lifetime. Only problem is it is more expensive than should be. Esee is the only one that makes this, so I guess we have to pay. Should be 1/2 the price, but low production numbers probably increase cost. For Those who practice bugout, this is a good tool.

Esee Knives firesteel

I have quite a few fire steels but none strike as much sparks off chert or quartz than the Esee firesteel. I've yet to try it out with the bow drill, hopefully soon. I've given one each to my son and daughter as well.

Quality steel.

I wouldn't expect anything else but quality hard working steel from the ESEE clan. The size is about what I expected based off pictures and it will throw a nice spark when I do my part.

Ole Sparky will be a good addition to your walkabout gear.

Have used it while walking about - testing various rocks to see if they will spark. Have not actually used it to start a fire yet. Based on the "test sparks", I feel confident that this will work just like they did back in the Ole Days. Seems a quality product. No buyers remorse here.

I had to test it as soon as I got it and it worked perfectly, the steel sparked as it should, I still need to practice Bow and Drill....I will buy another for a gift, great Fire Starter
