Heavy Duty Forest Folder

I have been dreaming for that kind of folder for quite a long time. Something heavy, strong with a rounded handle to take in the forest and built some shelter. RealSteel Knives, a Chinese company, may have heard my prayer as they are producing a Bushcraft Folder in two version: with and without the one hand opening option provided with two studs. 180 grams of a very well balanced 90mm blade length beefy companion. My first experience with Real Steel was the beautiful Megalodon which has had review here. Its main flaw was the awful clip and you know what ? The Bushcraft Folder has no clip but a beautiful textured G10 handle. Also the red liners are a very nice touch bringing a real touch of class. The blade is perfectly centered. The action is smooth. the action Southpaw friendly...  The blade is made of D2. This air hardening classical steel is not my favorite but some of my friends and co-writers like JD got an excellent opinion about it. As a reminder let’s not forget it’s a 13% chrome steel which can stain and can be a bear to get sharp. RealSteel seems to have bought tons of D2 as their production of fixed blades is mainly using that alloy. The HRC is 58-60 which is not the harder heat treatment for that steel. It seems good for a knife destined to resharpen in the field. Oh and this is a true scandi: no secondary bevel on that baby ! You can put it flat on some stone and you should be able to keep it like a razor ! The choice of lock is a thick Michael Walker's liner lock. It reminds me the lock of the Spyderco Gayle Bradley: thick liners locks are easy confortable to use. Don't forget: batoning with a folder is not a good idea with the lock engaged. Let's say it's not a good idea, period. Some chores are better kept for the uses of thick fixed blades. But the RealSteel BF can easy drill in wood and be twisted while cutting: there is no movement, no play: everything is very well adjusted. this is a very serious outdoor knife. The spine of the blade is sharp, certainly for striking a rod and lightning fire. I will soon round mine, as I prefer to have a confortable ramp to push with my thumb during woodworking. There is no hot spot on the handle. You can hold it very tight, it's almost like a fixed blade. The linerlock is recessed and you can not disengage it by holding the handle. Just be carful and always remember, as strong as a folder is it will never be as strong as fixed blade. Use it with respect and care. If the lock may fail there is no choil to protect your precious finger. So what do you got in the end ? An heavy, solid, easy to keep sharp bushcraft tool. OK. But for what price ? Mine was bought for less than 60 euros ! This is great for a knife destined to be used a lot and not ketp in a safe. In my opinion, this is a very solid bargain for a very serious wood companion. “Made in China” tools are getting better and better in terms of quality and prices and don’t forget, your Iphone X are also made in China. Great knife, but wrong grind

Great knife, but wrong grind for bushcrafting tasks. The handle scales are fantastic, and the action is beautiful. Everything about the knife says quality - the fit and finish, materials, design. Excellent comfort and control. The spine comes sharp enough to strike a ferro rod. The steel itself is decent, but I would have preferred to pay more for 154CM, or CPM-S30V; D2 is somewhat brittle and not stainless enough for the occasional use bushcrafting knives see (as opposed to an EDC). My main problem with the knife is the grind. The first night I took it out, I processed firewood and constructed a bow drill & fireboard. The blade was quite badly damaged - about 1mm of tip snapped off while awling out holes and much of the cutting edge itself was folded after notching the bow. Don't get me wrong - the flat grind produced epic feathersticks and shavings (which I cut first). But it's just not tough enough for bushcraft use. I remedied by regrinding to a scandi and reforming a new, slightly blunter tip. Not quite as razor sharp, but holds up much better. If you're not up for regrinding the blade, I'd suggest carrying this knife along with your main bushcraft fixed blade; use the fixed blade for batoning, notching, chopping and awling, and keep this one for feathersticks, food prep, softwood carving, etc. For the price, 4.9 stars, rounded up. If they offered it in 154CM or CPM-S30V with a factory scandi grind, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

It's a beast, and different

This will be great for carving and roughing bark for my sticks! Fits awesome in the hand. I like a knife without a clip. The red lines with the black micarta are pretty snazzy!!! The blade shape isn't shaped like the Scandinavian Puukko style but it's different and possesses a unique shape. Bravo!!! Opens like a charm!!! That's one of my favorite things to do with a knife. The groove in the handle near thumb stud is spot on. D2 steel is super strong!!! I can't worry about breaking down with this beast.

Just received this knife today, so this is an initial impression, not a performance review. Fit and finish on this knife is very good. The action is smooth and locks up tight. The texture on the scales provides good gripping surface without being abusive to hands or clothing, if you decided to carry it in a pocket instead of the belt pouch. Although, it would be a bit bulky for pocket carry. The belt pouch appears very sturdy. I kind of wish the area for releasing the liner lock was not flush with the frame, but stood around a little bit. Dual thumb studs are large. Aids in blade deployment, but hinders sharpening. The handle is 0.86" at it's thickest point and mine weighs 6.5 ozs. for the knife alone. The contour to the scales combined with the thickness gives a very good feel in the hand. It arrived usably sharp, although the tip was just not quite pointy. I always have to resharpen new knives to suit myself, so the problem was fixed. All in all, I'm pleased with the quality of the knife and don't anticipate performance issues.

Great Knife, sheathe not so much...

Overall this is a great knife in fit and finish. Every thing is flush and tight, no wobble or uneven edges. And for D2 steel, the price is very good. Overall the feel is good in the hand, and due to this being a larger folder it fits the hand better. The scales have a nice texture that aids in grip. The blade is fairly thick for a folding knife making it stout and a bit on the heavy side (if that's a concern for you). Would love to see a variation with a pocket clip. Now the sheathe on the other hand is utter crap. Thin nylon and weak rivets. The rivets tore out the second time I wore this knife. That said, I often don't buy a knife based on the sheathe as there are plenty of third party sheathes you can buy. Bought a nice Nite Ize sheathe for $12 that fits this knife nicely and is 100 times better than the sheathe that came with the knife.
