The Same, But Different

The only two differences in the SCHF42 and 42D are the colors of the grip panels and sheath (each brown for the 42D and black for the 42) and the shape of the blade... straight edge profile for the 42D and recurve for the 42. Frankly, I love them both. I carry the recurve when I have the choice and have the 42D for my stuck/make it home bag. The 42 (recurve edge profile) has slightly better cutting capability while the straight edge profile of the 42D makes for a slightly easier to maintain under adverse conditions edge. Honestly, you really can't go wrong with either of them. Pick one or the other or go with the SCHF9N if you want a bigger, beefier version of the recurved edge of the 42. These are some of the best values out there for EDC blades, camping, bushcrafting, or in a work environment like a ranch or farm. The price/performance ratio is always high with Schrade knives.

At last, a great knife and the price is right.

So i wanted a inexpensive knife to hike with that can preform many duties at once. I seen the first 42 and was impressed. I am not opposed to a recurve, but I have a few already and I am not that good at sharpening them, i am getting better! So when I seen that there was a straigfht edge coming i was really looking forward to it. And it was worth the wait. Good balance, great edge retention. The over all feel is top notch. I like jimping and i do not like jimping. This isn't to bad. The down sides are that the scales are......ok. Seen worse. Grip is not to bad thou I will be upgradeing them. The sheath isn't really a con.....given that there are many knives that come with better and worse. It is functional again i will be replacing it you may keep it. I actually like the coating on this. The blade seems to slide thru what ever I am cutting. It is well done and I cannot find a flaw. So I have put this knife to chore a few times and it has done superb.

A very useful knife

This is, in my opinion one of Schrade's finest knives. It's blade has beautiful lines and a nice thick spine. The color of the handle scales and sheath leave something to be desired. Micarta scales and a kydex sheath would have been nice to see on this knife. Maybe Schrade will offer it one day.
