Expanded review

After spending more time getting more intimate with my new knife, I believe the sheath is intended to be adjusted to preferred length with or without the retention strap. Pull the velcro apart, and you can fold it down further. This will raise the height of where the knife rides. If you still want the retention strap, then you can mount it how and where you want with the new adjustment. Someone has even described mounting it with a simple rivet or stitching. The only holdout about the sheath for me is the lock. Only time will tell how durable it is, and how long it will last. I have high hopes.

The Best Fixed Blade of the Year!

I echo all the other positive comments and reviews here, this is (for the price) one of the best, most innovative knife and sheath designs to come out for a long time. handle feels like the 3D ESSE. Very light sharp and ergonomic, a fighter but still a backwoods workhorse. Only Con: I am confounded that they could not invest in a snaps and rivet for the retention strap, which is not attached to the sheath and often just comes off. It’s sub par versus the rest of the high quality well thought out MADE IN USA design. Minor point!

If you want a solid utility/combat knife but don’t want to spend a ton of money then you can’t do much better than this. It’s basically a Ka Bar but with better edge and point geometry. The handle is very ergonomic and the scales don’t feel cheap or flimsy even though they are injection molded plastic. The blade stock is more robust than a Ka Bar and it is full tang. The knife has heft but is balanced perfectly for its intended uses. The biggest plus is the sheath. It has absolutely zero play and is locked up tighter than a bank vault because of the secondary thumb retention mechanism that they employed. For this price point you really can’t find a better blade and sheath system that is ready to go without need for aftermarket handle scales or sheaths. My one knit pick is that my edge bevels aren’t perfectly symmetrical but once I have beat on it some I will be regrinding the edge bevels to my personal preference regardless. I hope this review helps thanks!

Nice knife

This seems a great knife by some outstanding makers and designers. The next generation Kabar fighting knife of sorts. The sheath seems solid, but could maybe be better. The retention strap some have complained about not being sewn in I think was intended to be optional. As in removable for those that don't want or need it. Otherwise it is held on by simply being sandwiched between the heavy straps of balistic nylon and velcro forming the belt strap. I removed it to store in the box. Simple. The locking mechanism holds the knife firmly in place. I think it's a great evolution for the Kabar knife by excellent makers and designers.

All I hoped it would be!

Spartan Blades' collaboration with KaBar based on KaBar's traditional fighting knife design is a winner. And KnifeCenter's price makes it a no-brainer. I especially love the Harsey designed injection-molded handle and the trigger-release kydex sheath. The fact that the knife is made entirely in the USA is a nice bonus. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Suggested U.S. Military Knife Replacement

As a former USMC VIetnam Veteran who carried a Ka-Bar Mk2 by virtue of my MOS (RADIO OPERATOR), I agree that the 80 yr old Icon is long overdue for an update and upgrade. Aaron, of Gideon's Tactical (YouTube Channel; please see!), has suggested that this Professional Grade Spartan Blade Harsey Fighter is the knife to do the honors! His video concerning this knife has certainly convinced me that it is worthy of consideration! But, though I love this knife, I am not ready to put my own Imprimatur on it until the US Military has done so! They may have completely different specs in mind than Aaron or me, but modern design and materials are definitely in the offing! And how appropriate Ka-Bar as the manufacturer seems to me! But certainly, as a personal acquisition, this knife is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Even As A Marine Who Carried The Original Ka-Bar...

...I love this knife, and see the benefits of the upgrades it presents! As I already own the Nessmuk, I am familiar with the fit and finish, and the significance of the differences between the two Harsey Knives and the Old MK2! This is a significant adjustment to purpose; beefed-up strength via full tang blade; more comfortable handle; more accomodating grind; lanyard hole; much better sheath; and yet still uses that 1095 CroVan steel that Ka-Bar understands so well! I can't wait to receive mine; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Pine-Bar!

Top contender to replace the Ka-Bar. USMC 1/1 Bravo Veteran 07-12 Everything I need on my battle belt. With just two of my fingers I Couldn't eject the blade from its sheath due to retaining lock. The velcro strap is a non factor. I put that into the sheath. I actually installed a button lock strap with using only a rivet I bought from a craft store. Conveniently easy! Blade is what I paid for and the Ka-Bar nod is a great homage to its predecessor. Would never consider a 1 star grade. #Pine-Bar

Pretty good knife

PROS —Good construction / quality —Razor sharp —Fits Hybrid roll (combat & field knife) —Well thought out sheath overall - nice locking system —Nice aesthetics —Full tang CONS —Handle scale material is too narrow and somewhat slippery —Don’t care for Velcro on sheath (wears out, not as secure) *I had custom textured micarta handle scales made for this know and it was a HUGE improvement. Still wish grip was thicker - better ergonomics but that is subjective and perhaps others will love feel in hand. At the end of the day, I still prefer the ergonomics of the Kabar USMC knife with kraton grip over this knife but do like that the Spartan knife is a full tang.

Good Knife: Not So Good Sheath

I don’t dislike the knife, rear handle swell is nice. The blade is overly light for chopping, would prefer it’s weight without the “blood grooves.” A nod to the original Ka-Bar I suppose. I would give it five stars, I am not unaware of the custom makers origins. My main complaint regards the sheath and it is that the Velcro strap you see in these pictures on the sheath is indeed only Velcro, it is not attached to the sheath not by a stitch or a rivet, but only by a small amount of well: Velcro: using your weakest two fingers you can remove Velcro retention strap from the sheath. So imagine yourself unsheathing the knife to work in and around brush, you will quickly find this tab of “retention” is missing, under sand, leaves, snow, floating away in water. Secondly, when the knife is inserted it is hard to get the Velcro on the strap to line up right and also it stops “retaining” once it gets muddy, sandy, snowy/icy, etc. This is a factory mistake of some kind right? No. My friends sheath came the same way. In my opinion, “RETENTION STRAP” needs to be stitched or riveted on and a snap added to close around knife. If in doubt: SEE OTHER KNIVES.
