A Really Great Everyday Carry Knife

In the distant past I have purchased several Sog Fixed Blades. High quality was always my description. I believe that this the second folder that I have ever purchased from them. Extremely well made so much so the handle feels like it was built in my hand. Though everyone has different needs the blade shape and length on this knife is just perfect for me.

Very nice!

I have to give this a 5. Everything about it is quality and strength, it is even a thicker blade than any other 4 inch that I have had. It has a large handle portion, which makes it a rather large knife for 4 inches of blade but that handle is also so right. It feels great in your hand with a considerable amount of grip stipling. It looks very nice out of the box, it might look even better with some good wear and tear on it, along with some stories of camping or Bushcraft. I suspect for most people this might be considered too large for EDC. That might depend on the environment you will be in. It does have a solid and secure clip, and for most places where I go I consider it a maximum for pocket EDC.

Wow ! This is a pocket knife ?

I’ve carried medium to large pocket knives since the 1960s, and the last year I EDC’d the first extra large one, a Quartermaster! So today I got my SOG XR ! Wow ! What a monster of a knife! It’s awesome, and I love how well it works, it’s opening with the flipper, it’s lockup, and release to fold it up, and it functions super smooth ! The grip is the best, with all the jimping along with the finger grooves! I could have saved a mint on other knives if I’d had gotten this earlier! Not your little Swiss Army Knife. Many of you will love this!

Initial Impression

Just received this big folder and I’m impressed. Have had a TAC XR for about a month now and like it so much I wanted to pick up this beast. Must say that SOG has been really knocking them out of the park recently after some quiet years. The QC seems to be spot on with tight tolerances, no rattling, blade dead centered without any movement at all when opened. The big blade flies out with three options for opening. There’s the kicker (flipper tab), large opening hole on blade, and you can use the xr lock and a flick of the wrist. The blade itself is razor sharp right out of the box. Literally hair shaving sharp! This is a big beefy folder and blade stock, and with all the aggressive jimping stays fixed in your hand. Also, easy to use with gloves on; which you’re likely to need with long and heavy work because of all the jimping. Have a bunch of high end knives and this is my third SOG, and if they keep things up not likely to be the last.

FaaaaanTastic!!!

Just received the knife today and a I want to the your wonderful customer service in helping it meet up with me so quikly. The knife is great! Ilove a knive with a good weight to it. is I know where it is at and it won't fall apart when I need to use it. It was razor sharp and ready to go right out of the box. The handle is the perfect size and is textured and has jimping. for a solid grip. I wish it had a sheath but I will get one made but the is not any fault of the knife.

Serious EDC Folder

There is no way to describe the substantial feeling of this knife. Its a beast, but in all the right ways! It inspires confidence in knowing this will handle what ever situation may come your way. I've heard some reviewers criticize the amount of jimping or that its to aggressive. I totally disagree. It is not uncomfortable at all in the bare hand and gives a locked in grip to feel extremely secure. Its buttery smooth action and positive lock up is fantastic! Over all a 10! I'm a big guy and this is my new EDC that I refuse to leave the house without it in my pocket! I don't measure ounces! Lol Quality, and being over built is more important to me than saving a few ounces. If you are worried about weight go on a diet and carry a bigger knife!! Its worth the price and the knife center has come through again!

Bulletproof

Too heavy for pocket carry, so it goes in the backpack. Well built, super sturdy, and easy to flip after some oil and a couple of hours flipping.

A Proper Gentleman Warrior's Folding Knife

People this ain't no Tofu eating, Yoga doing, Prius driving ninny knife! Oh da** he went there! Yes! This is a proper gentleman warrior's folder. Starting with the aesthetics the thing is an absolutely beautifully crafted knife when it's sitting there either folded or extended. I mean even the clip is gorgeous. It's nice and hefty looking like the rest of the blade, it has the SOG logo embossed/stamped into it and it has a certain battle fatigue to it. The handle is just as beautiful as the blade itself. The blade has a nice thickness to it and beautifully machined with tasteful marking. I don't know if it's laser etched into the blade or just printed on the blade but it's nice. The jimping is pronounced but not uncomfortable I figure they made it that way for outdoor use with a gloved hand. The flipper can become uncomfortable if you're constantly playing with it but I put a little bit of athletic tape on the tip of my index finger and it's fine. If you're just flipping it open only when you need it then it wont bother you. I like the jimping exactly the way it is. It ensured a good solid fit and suits the overall look of the knife. When the handle of the knife looks as good as the rest of the knife you have a winner. Another nice detail is thing rectangular pommel which I guess if you use diagonally, you could use as a glass breaker or use it straight down as a pain compliance tool. Any way I love this knife and I'm just waiting for Knife Center to get the serrated version to come in and I will definately buy that one also. The only problem I have with nice knives like this is you have to buy them in pairs because you don't want to use them. It's like driving a 100K Mercedes sedan off road. It makes you cringe and go eww. So I'll use one just to keep in the case and never touch and the other I'll use. I would highly recommend this knife. I don't know if you need to go full Magna Cut steel it's a folder people you cut your Amazon boxes down, cut rope, grapefruits or make feather sticks at the campsite. Regular folding knife stuff you're not going to be bushwacking Indiana Jones style. Magan Cut for an ESEE 4 or 6 yes but for a folder it's overkill pretentious douchebaggery! Oh da** I triggered the knife nerds.

Disappointed

Received the SOG Seal XR today and the Knife Center service was outstanding as usual. The knife itself is well built of quality materials. However the disappointment factor is the lock. I don't know if it's a factory flaw or what the problem is but the blade will not flip open using the flipper. I sticks closed. You can open it manually and if you close it gently it will flip open using the flipper. If you flip it closed it will not flip open again, you must open it manually to get it open again. I own a SOG (Vietnam) bowie made of AUS 8 steel that I cannot get an edge on when AUS 8 is an easy steel to sharpen and after this experience I will not be buying any more SOG products. This is not the fault of Knife Center, they performed at their usual outstanding level of professionalism and fast shipping. This is a SOG quality problem. Shame on you Sog!

SOG lock bar system fail!

+ shipped quickly, heavy duty build as expected, clip point, good steel, and steals finish. I had a few of the assisted Aegis flippers from their early years, and they lacked handle grip for an alleged tactical knife, and this model has corrected that. I have roughly 40 knives, mostly Spyderco, Benchmade and Coldsteel, and this is not even close. I never had lock fails with any of these after decades. Hopefully mine was a one off, but of the three ways to open, only the easy lock bar retraction worked. Not even with the second hand could it be accomplished. At this price point and targeted audience, this is a catastrophic fail. I will never trust a company that would allow the knife to leave the factory like that. KnifeCenter handled ther routine quickly and painlessly, to their credit. I've worked decades in Emergency Services, reliability is essential. I've replaced it with the bomb proof Coldsteel SR1, just wish they offered it in flat black steel coating and handle.
