sog seal Xr

this very knife has been my EDC for past 2 years! its built like a sherman tank and is ss heavy ( over 8 oz.) im a big believer in heavy duty builds, and the sog seal xr is just that. never has had a wobble, zero play actually. the crossbar lockup is solid. mine has the original green scales and thats fine with me, theyre still plenty grippy!... i have around 200 knives in ny collection and most are in the EDC option variety, but i have found no reason to swap out this knife!...

You Need to Know

I wanted to reply to KENNITH who had “sticking problems,” and anyone else who owns this knife. I had what I thought were sticking problems as well, where no amount of strength would allow for the blade to flip. But I figured it out. It’s not because of any of the causes you claim. It’s because the way the handle falls within your hand, every now and then as you’re about to flip, your thumb pushes up on the release. That locks it. No matter how manly of a man you are, if you’re pushing the release up towards the front of the knife, it locks. I didn’t carry the knife for years when I didn’t know what was going on. I couldn’t trust it. Now! Now it’s a favorite… yeah, it’s a beauty with a feature that has to be understood to be loved.

Great quality knife

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this knife. The overall feel and comfort is next level. The blade is super sharp and it's held its edge over the last couple of years. I wanted to wait a while before I left a review so I could be an honest review. This SOG has held up beautifully. The crossbar lock is a great feature. It's a large knife.

I'm happy with this knife

I've carried the original version of this knife, almost every day, for 8 years. It's been my hard use knife that I carry on my hip, along with any other edc knife I choose to carry in my pocket. It is my go-to if I'm doing anything other than super light cutting. I use it for light prying, cutting branches, any work-related stabbing, cutting through thick packaging or boxes, etc. it's clearly designed to be used when wearing gloves which makes it a solid work knife. Out of all the knives in my collection it's been sharpened the most, by far. I bought this new one for the magnacut. I'm hoping I won't need to sharpen it as much. The crossbar sticks a little bit when open, but so did my original and it has worn in nicely; the play is now super smooth, with no modifications. If this is going to sit in a case, or not be used, maybe it's not the knife for you. My original knife weighs 232 grams, while the new one weighs 193 grams. My only real gripes about this knife are the titanium liners. I understand that a lot of people didn't like the heft of this knife, but I rather liked it. The balance point on the new knife is about 1/2 inch closer to the blade now, and you can definitely feel it in-hand. Furthermore, it doesn't sit flush on my magnetic knife rack since titanium isn't magnetic. All-in-all I'm happy with my purchase so that I won't need to sharpen my knife as often. If that doesn't matter to you, then I'd stick with the s35vn version.

I own both, this and the original. I got a bit chubby awaiting this version, as it would arrive just after snow season began, and the jimping is obviously designed for use with gloves. Felt no need to do too much detail research as the main selling point as we can all agree was titanium. Yet, here I sit with a blade with identical weight as its father. And why am I seemingly the only 1 that noticed? Ofcourse, apologies to any I missed who did notice we paid $75 more for a blade made with the potential to be 3x as strong and 5x as durable, impervious to the elements and at only 1/3 the weight. I say FAIL ON EVERY LEVEL. We couldve gotten SFORTY-FIVEVN, or even a reputable American classic 20CV or its newest collectable and illusive shadow CTS-204P paired with less titanium for the same price and had a true histirical milestone for SOG. But..looking back and seing the current, they offered us a pocket brick, and we purchased an authentic USA made pocket brick. Should've listened to my inner child, who at times is still wiser than me currently, and bought a Miguards Viking or Reate Terminator.

So disappointed

After 3 months of my knife being on Knifecenter's payment plan I finally made the last payment and my knife was shipped to me within the week. As soon as it arrived I immediately opened it and began the inspection process. The blade was centered perfectly and the edge was hair popping sharp. The grinds were even and there was zero blade play while the blade was open...and here is where the troubles start. After opening and closing the knife a few times the crossbar lock began to stick. I had to use quite a bit of strength to get it to unstick, and I am a big, strong man. I had read that this problem has happened to a few of these knives and had been informed that the coating on the blade tang was gumming up the lockbar and causing it to stick and that it would break in over time. This bothers me because if the coating is causing it to stick then dirt, and pocket lint, and grime and blood would do the same in the field. Which is no bueno. After a week of "breaking it in" the knife was working no better and my finger and thumb were raw from trying to close it. I looked at Knifecenter's return policy but it said the knife could only be returned if it was in new condition and after a week of opening and closing it (but not cutting or carrying it) the coating had been considerably worn off the tang, so therefore it was no longer in "new" condition. Also, since I bought it on the payment plan my initial 25% payment was non-refundable. I didn't see anything about an exchange which is what I really would have preferred. I had just waited 3 months for my knife and a week for shipping and a week of trying to break it in. I did not want to wait some more by sending it in to SOG and then waiting for them to fix it and send it back. So broke the cardinal rules and dissassembled the knife (gasp! Although they obviously meant for a level of disassembly since the knife comes with different colored scales). I took some sandpaper to the tang shelf where the crossbar lock sits in the locked position and carefully sanded away a small amount of metal. Then I cleaned the knife and re-assembled it. And what do you know, it worked! I was thrilled! Finally I could carry my knife with confidence. Then, my happiness was suddenly cut short, by the crossbar lock suddenly going slack. One of the springs had broken. So, after all that I now need the knife to be repaired anyhow (or new springs sent to me).I am currently waiting for SOG to answer my email but since SOG never answered my emails inquiring as to what Rockwell their Magnacut is I have little confidence that they will get back to me. I think I will call them on Monday. I don't know about you guys but I think that a $300 knife should work properly and reliably immediately. A "break in period" should only make the knife work better and not be necessary to make it work at all. I'm so disappointed.
