Love the Action

First off, this is my first SOG and only my second auto (other Kershaw Launch6) if you dont include a S&W otf from the 80's I found as a kid 40 yrs ago, and there is no comparison with that old toy. I bought this as a gift for myself, meaning it wasnt really intended to be anything more then a collection piece and I DO NOT collect knives. I carry a knife a every day for years for work and I put them to use. Against all the other reviews I find the quality and action of this knife to be exceptional. I am a strong believer in quality tools and wont waste my loot on crap for work, or play. And I find the value of this knife at this price to be worth noting, granted i have not worked it, and likely wont, but I can tell if that was my intentions I would be left impressed. Its light, slim, tight and fast. And best yet it is American made, I will not buy a knife made elsewhere. If for no other reason then it is the right thing to do. Think of it this way, would you lend money to someone you know would never pay you back, even if they promised huge interest on your loan, well thats what you are doing when you send your money to China. Spend your money here when ever you can.

My Knife

This is the second SOG knife I have owned.... I completely wore the other one out after 10 years. More for protection and daily use. Works great. Handles great. Very satisfied....After all : "It's a SOG".

Bad quality control

The ergonomics are great, it's a slick knife to be sure. I just wish SOG gave a damn about QC. The lock up is sloppy. Has very slight side to side wiggle but the vertical movement plain sloppy and gives no confidence that it'll last. Then while the blade is closed there is so much virtical slop that the blade hits the back spacer. You can see the dent the blade leaves in the aluminum. The lock itself is annoying. I know knives need to break in but this feels awful. A week of opening and closing, it still has grit and bad lock stick. Also, when you close the knife with any authority it goes into the forward lock detent on its own, making the next opening even more sticky. But let's throw SOG QC a bone and say that those issues are more difficult to notice and can slip through the cracks. The last issue is obvious to anyone who isn't blind. The right handle scale isn't flush against the back spacer. There's a gap you can see daylight though. I noticed it within seconds out of the box. I don't know if it was put together wrong or if there's something wrong with the scale itself. But how that got built, assembled, inspected and boxed up with that defect I could never guess. Garbage. Plain garbage. Shape up SOG. DO BETTER.

Cons: Lock Ease of Use

The XR lock is difficult to unlock to deploy the knife.

I was looking for a knife that will deploy quickly and smoothly with one hand. I found the concept of a single button to unlock and deploy appealing enough to order the SOG-TAC AU AUTO. However, in the locked position it takes an extraordinary amount of force to unlock the low profile button, significantly slowing deployment. Once unlocked the blade deploys as expected. I'm sending this knife back and resuming my search, keeping in mind the downside to ordering a new knife online is that you can't hold it in your hand and operate it to help you decide.
