Best handling CQB/CQC fixed blade

Doesn’t matter what others may have said against this knife but the other than the sheath, this knife is legit. Everything that I would want out of a knife from the excellent blade composition, edge retention, balance and handling and everything you need out of a fixed blade tactical knife. The sheath is good but that isn’t what makes or breaks a knife for me, so no big deal it is a good sheath. The blade and handles make this knife great all conditions knife from wet or dry or cold or hot weather, it performs. Period.

Great Pack Knife

Out of the box razor sharp. No hotspots on handle using multiple grips. Not in love with sheath, but it is not worthless and will replace with a leather one very soon. Knife is tough and has handled every task asked of it. Is better at processing wood and meat, not as clean cutting on vegetables, but I am just picking. With leather sheath this will become my trail and bushcraft knife.

Perfect in every way for...

For my use as a hunter, this fits the bill as far as general field dressing and skinning. It’s bigger and not called a skinner or has that recognizable belly to the blade, but I’ve found that I’ve grabbed this and done most of the field dressing with this knife. Everything is great about it to me, the blade shape, very universal, can perform many jobs well, it’s not too small or too big to skin a goat! The weight is phenomenal, light, yet has enough heft to it, also the balance is perfect as well. The sheath is pretty good, I’ve mounted it several positions, SOB mount, crossdraw, strong side regular draw, depending on what other knives are on my belt. The sharpness our of the box is hair shaving, the steel will prove itself after a few more hunts. But I have no doubt this will perform as needed. Good job SOG, glad to see USA made quality on this knife. Hope to see more from you of this caliber!

Get'in er done

I've had this knife for a few years now. Used it around the property, camping, and it would be excellent for more precarious use as well. The handle is comfortable in every grip. I was worried about hot spots but haven't encountered any in use. Great protrusion at the rear for imaginative uses. The choil looks uncomfortable, but it isn't, it works well. The jumping on the spine is crafted well and the finger guard holds your hand in place. If you need to get a fire goin in the wild, the Pillar can handle the task, as long as you aren't trying to baton a huge log but anything reasonable it will handle with relative ease. Feather sticks and light batoning, no problem, along with scraping a fire steel or bark/fatwood. The sheath secures the knife great and I haven't noticed it dulling the blade with hundreds of draws. The knife should sell out all the time, it's that good.

Extremely TOUGH tactical/bush knife

The SOG Pillar comes razor sharp from the box. The steel is extremely durable, not difficult to sharpen, and does not buckle under hard use such as batoning wood. I don’t think it is really designed for that, but it does hold up without chipping, or the edge folding. Tip is also quite strong. The micarta handle isn’t going to corrode or break on you, will provide a sure grip even when wet. The sheath is top notch: it flips open to attach to a belt with ease, then allows you to lock it, so that the release doesn’t accidentally get pressed while hiking, etc. The sheath is made from Kydex, and there are several lanyard holes around the edge of it to allow it to be lashed in a variety of positions. The piece that the belt goes through is removable, and can be repositioned to allow the knife to be carried horizontally/“scout carry”. A previous review stated that the sheath squeezes the knife so firmly that it scratches the blade. The sheath does squeeze the blade firmly. There is zero rattling, and the blade will not fall out of the sheath even while running and holding it upside down. HOWEVER, the blade is about a 60 on the Rockwell scale, and the sheath DOESN'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO THAT. It is IMPOSSIBLE for the sheath to scratch the blade. I have pulled my knife in and out of my sheath dozens of times. NO SCRATCHES! It does make some faint marks on the highly polished part of the blade, but these are not scratches. I suspect the reviewer who made this claim got some kind of foreign material in his sheath (like sand) and this is the culprit. An excellent, durable blade that is made for tough work. I plan on buying a second one. Highly recommend!!

SOG Pillar

I’m new to the prepper world and the SOG Pillar is my first survival knife to own. I do like the weight and balance as well as the feel of the grip, but what really sold me on this knife was the free sharpening they offer for the life of the knife. I’ve never been very good at sharpening the smaller knives I own, so this service is definitely a big selling point to me. This knife was razor sharp out of the box, shaved the hair on my arm with ease, and I want to be able to maintain that edge. This knife was considerably more than I intended to pay when I first started researching, but I’m very happy with the purchase.

I remember the SOG of the 1990s

The fact that this SOG blade is made in the USA beckoned me to get it. I'm really glad I did. It is a beautiful knife. It's well designed, crafted, and finished. My only tiny complaint would be that it arrived with a teeny-tiny nick in the belly of the edge. I was able to hone it out though. This knife is basically a variation on the SOG Seal Pup. The blade is basically the same, although the Pillar uses better steel than the AUS-8 in the Seal Pup and this handle is much nicer. I am a big fan of Canvas Micarta handles. I love the way it feels in my hand. Canvas Micarta is especially good when the handle form is well designed like the Pillar. The index finger indentations in the pillar (for a forehand grip) are perfect. Thumb jimping on the spine is perfectly positioned. The pommel of the full tang has a lanyard hole and a kind of jimping that I've used to scrape my ferro rod. It works great. The pommel also lends itself well to painful tactical uses. Balance & weight are perfect too. I own an original SOG Seal 2000 with 440A steel from 1995, made in Seki-City, Japan. I've been disappointed in the Taiwan era of SOG knives. Anyone who owns a Japan-era SOG knows exactly what I mean. This USA-made Pillar reminds me of the good old knives SOG started out making. By the way, the sheath is very good too. I read that it scratched someone's Pillar. I have not had that problem. I would say that sheath was defective. Mine is fine. I love the adjustable DOTS clip of the sheath too. Very handy for multiple carry orientations.

Best Fix Blade

I have been incredibly impressed with this knife! I can tell SOG is really trying to come back to their roots with this fix blade. It can take a beating, and maintain its edge no matter what outdoor activity I throw at it. Really can't say enough great things about this knife! If you're on the fence, I strongly encourage you to buy this one!

Incredible value, great tool

For a knife using this steel you can't do much better. Fits nicely in the hand, is quite sharp and attention to detail is obvious. My only issue is with the sheath, besides a molded lip to retain the knife, the sheath squeezes the blade firmly enough to scratch it. Brand new, with oil on the blade just a couple of times in and out of the sheath put serious scratches in the blade you can feel are quite deep with your fingernail. I can't imagine how bad it might get when dirt or sand get into the sheath. If this were not for gritty tasks I might consider returning but you really can't touch a blade of this size with this steel for this kind of money...

Apparently SOG got lazy

This knife checks all the boxes, on paper: good steel, cool finish, grippy micarta, and a great sheath. When I received mine, it checked hopefully one box ( good steel), but micarta was slick, finish was not as described and the sheath was an absolute disaster. Now I'm on my second one and it's still the same BS story. SOG has lost a lot of credibility, and KC should QC its products.

Bad Joke - Sheath and Belt Clip

The Good: I am very impressed with the knife itself. Great steel, handle, balance, sharpness, etc. The Bad: The sheath could be a tighter fit. The Really Bad. The sheath belt clip that attaches to the main sheath is inaccurately made. It is too narrow and does not mount across the width of the sheath and has to be screwed on with only two screws, on only one side of the sheath and belt clip If the belt clip was wider it would be able to be screwed on both sides with four screws. The Ugly: I called SOG Knives and spoke with the representative who explained that they know about this problem and have no plans to provide a new clip. I asked if they had any other sheaths or clips that would fit and the answer is no. Sorry SOL! To attach the other side that does not reach the holes in the sheath, I had to lash some paracord to attach the other to mounting holes. I'll try to find another sheath on-line.
