I CARRY A SEPARATE KNIFE FOR UTILITY (ALSO SPYDERCO) BUT HAD PURCHASED THIS KNIFE SOLELY FOR WEAPON RETENTION FOR SUPPORT SIDE CARRY. I HAD ALWAYS LIKED THE REVERSE "S" BLADE DESIGN OF THE CIVILIAN AND MATRIARCH BUT FOUND THAT I COULD NOT DRAW THOSE SIZED KNIVES AND DEPLOY THE BLADE WITHOUT REPOSITIONING THE KNIFE IN MY HAND SO WHEN I FOUND THIS GEM I HAD TO GET IT. THE LIL' MATRIARCH IS DELICA SIZED AND WORKS PERFECTLY. VERY GOOD FIT AND FINISH AND, OF COURSE, SUPER SHARP OUT OF THE BOX. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IT'S SUPPOSEDLY OK FOR GENERAL UTILITY USE BUT I COULDN'T COMMENT ON THAT AS I THATS NOT WHAT I CARRY IT FOR. DID NOT COME WITH THE CIVILIAN "WARNING TAG" IF YOU'RE WONDERING. WILL LIKELY BUY AS LEAST ONE MORE, MAYBE TWO, JUST IN CASE. ALSO, PROMPT SHIPPING FROM KNIFECENTER AS ALWAYS.
Not much of an EDC style blade. I purchased this knife as a small personal defense piece to be utilized in the old traditional "cut and run" senario. I carry it addition to other more traditional EDC knives. It's a very nasty slasher to be sure. Very light, strong lockup, and as usual with Spyderco, beautifully crafted. It's a winner!
The Lil' Matriarch is now my do it all knife. On canoe trips, it cuts through rope with ease and I do on the spot pruning in the yard. Also, it is comforting to have palmed in my hand when walking to my vehicle in poorly lit parking lots. The texture of the grip is deep and far superior to the Spyderco Delica I purchased in 1999.Combined with the knurling at the end of the blade for your thumb, I'm sure it gives a great grip in wet conditions. While I do own more Cold Steel knives than this brand, Spyderco products are more versatile for my type of usage. Atta' boy to the Knifecenter shipping department, the Lil' Matriarch arrived in 2 days via the U.S Mail!
So a simple review +Handle is ergonomic and feels nice in hand but if you have big hands it might be too small. +Opening is very easy and lock is easy to use and its strong. +VG-10 is a great steel and the blade comes very sharp -If you don't know what you are doing, this blade may be hard to resharpen -Strictly for self-defense
The ergonomics (for my hand) are not as comfortable as in the Civilian or the Superhawk, but it's close. The upside to this non-S handle type is that the LM can be used in a variety of utility uses for which the other two are not designed for. The rest is fine. I would have preferred a different type of opening system for this particular knife but I can't complain. Glad I got it.
This is a nice little knife. It came very sharp. It opens ralatively easy with a thumb in the hole and clicking it open. This is also a very light knife. This is a blade I'll carry for awhile.
