If you can only buy one knife, let this be the one.

I've owned hundreds of knives, even was half owner of knife business, but if I was allowed only one knife--this would be the one! I expected the sheath to just be an "envelope" to store knife in, but the sheath was much better than sheath that came with my Benchmade Bushcrafter. I have several custom knives that came with much lower quality sheaths. Back to knife-blade very well made, sharp as the devil. Probably sharper than most weekend "outdoorsmen" should be trusted with. Love carbon steel, if a person can't clean and dry off a blade they probably don't need a knife anyway. I can live with synthetic handle, not pretty, but will outlast me. This knife will do any knife chore and more. I'm taking it on an elk hunt this fall; chosen over several very expensive models. Sure won't lose it if I lay it down. I know you don't know me but---buy one of these. They are sort of old world steel combined with new age handle material. Most importantly---will cut anything you should ever use a knife for.

Rough and Ready? Don't forget your steady!

I live on the end of Long Island where I spend a lot of time on the water fishing and beach combing. I always carry a sheath knife when I am out and about. The svord general purpose field knife (4.75 inch blade) is the perfect companion for these outings. After a day of cutting bait, fishing line, and scratching about for beach coming "treasure", The Svord knife gets a wash down and an oil wipe. The blade is strong as h_ _ l, very sharp out of the box, and the orange handle fits my hand perfectly. The handle is very grip positive with no slipage when wet and slimy. The size and weight of the knife allows all day carry with out any bother or notice, and the sheath keeps the knife safe, snug, but ready at a moments notice. You can't expect more than this folks!

Svord General Outdoor knife

Greeting once again! I bought this knife not sure what I would get for $26. This this is sweet! while not replacing the Mora companion this is a great compliment. Mora works well as a bushcraft carver that also works well as a field knife, the smaller tasks. The Svord is more a field knife that will cover most carving tasks (the tip is not quite as pointed as the Mora). But the emphasis for the two is not the same. "General Outdoors" indicates utility carving, game processing and butchery, camp kitchen work, etc. This blade works so very well in everyone of these tasks! I don't baton save dire emergencies (lost the tomahawk) so I don't bother abuse testing. If you want to abuse your knife get a Ka-bar or Ontario 499. I did do some carving and kitchen work and was very pleased. The handle is a bit big but will fit every sized hand. I can't imagine a normal hand this thing won't fit, maybe Andrea the Giant. Both my Svord's came very sharp, stopping made them hair popping sharp. Did not require much extra work, very impressive. Being a field knife first, the emphasis is placed on skinning, butchering, sheltering, and utility carving. The convex edge excels at this and retains it's sharpness incredibly well. Nicely balanced, the weight is in the handle leaving the blade to feel very light (the knife as a whole is very light, a balanced knife that weighs a pound still sucks) I think Nessmuk and Kephart would be proud to own this knife given an opportunity, it amazes me fewer people know of this maker outside their "peasant folder". The sheath, again, is my only gripe as it is a rubberized canvas. Protects well, very long lasting... you're gonna need to pay more attention to keeping your blade oiled and cared for. This includes periodic pulling from storage and proper care if it goes on the shelf for emergency use. Therefore; worth every penny. In my quest to help others get started in the adventure called "bushcraft" without getting caught up by the geirdo crowd telling you folks to sell a kidney for a tool, the Svord General Outdoors Knife is an outstanding choice without breaking the bank or scaring away anyone looking to get started.

Terrible Sheath

This high carbon blade performs nicely. The handle is a plastic type material and the seams on each side were slightly raised and definitely would be uncomfortable if not sanded down. I know this is a budget knife but the sheath is one of the worst I've seen. It's not leather by the way. The part of the sheath that would hold a fire steel is ridiculous. Buy this knife for the high carbon blade then no problem. I guess you would want to find another sheath if you planned on wearing it unless you like looking like a dork. If your just throwing it in the glove box or tackle box the sheath will hold the knife just fine.

Good General Purpose Knife

I became interested in this knife after having seen it being used at a camp outing I was attending. I watched as a young man batoned with it and made some feather sticks. He was pretty skillful at doing it and the knife was razor sharp. I watched him put the knife in a custom made sheath, then he proceeded to start a fire with the wood he prepared. I ask him what kind of knife it was. He pulled it proudly out of the sheath and told me that it was his new companion at camp. I ask what was so special about the knife and he said "It just works". Then he let me handle it. I was surprised how sharp it was after watching him do all that work with it. It held an edge nicely. It also felt good in my hand. A very controllable knife. And after he told me what he paid for it, well, I had to buy one. Since I bought it I have put it to used during several camp outings. Its really not a knife that one would do fine detailed work with, the blade is too long and wide. But it is an excellent knife for allot of the heavier duty tasks one does while in the outdoors. It holds an edge well. The sheath has allot to be desired, that's why I gave it a lower rating. Not really excited about the handle material either, but it feels good in my hand and appears to be quite durable, at least so far. But as far as a good general outdoor knife is concerned, I think it was a good buy.

Mediocre at Best

I have been excited about trying Svord knives since I heard of them, about ten years ago, in James Ayres' book "The Tactical Knife." I tried a Peasant folder long ago, and I hated it. It doesn't cut anything efficiently. But this review is about the Kiwi General Outdoors knife. I had always heard that the Svord fixed blade knives performed better than the folders. So far, that seems to be the case, but at this price point, and given the company's reputation, I'd say the Outdoors knife is still a pretty poor product. The knife arrived with a decent cutting edge at least. The other Svord knife that arrived with it was not so good, and needed a touch-up right out of the box. This Outdoor knife passed my most typical cutting test, cutting a piece of plastic trimmer line for a yard trimmer. This plastic is tough, and I've found that a knife that cuts the line well will cut about anything well. The outdoor knife BARELY passes the test, whereas a Mora, Opinel, or Fallkniven passes the test very easily. The handle is mediocre in terms of comfort. It has so-so ergonomics, even for my huge hands. For average-size hands, it might not be comfortable at all. The plastic handle does seem reasonably tough, I suppose. This knife came without a lanyard, but that is easily added. It feels like a cheap kitchen knife. The sheath is. . . . not for me. Maybe some other people would like it. It's a cheap-looking and -feeling synthetic material, made to resemble leather. For all I know, it's very durable. It does hold the knife securely. The knife sits so low in the sheath that drawing it is a challenge. The blade, when it arrived, was in its sheath, which is an unusual way to store and ship knives. This one, unlike the other, was NOT coated in gooey grease when it arrived. The blade looks thicker than advertised. I didn't measure it, but I'd guess the spine at 1/8" or .125 inches or about three to four millimeters. I was expecting a blade closer to .10 inches. I do like the thickness. It's thicker than most Moras, but not so thick that it gives up a great deal of cutting efficiency. I have spent years WANTING to like these knives, but it comes down to how the knife cuts. This one won't compare to a $10 Mora in cutting ability. I can't see recommending this knife to anyone. You're far better-off with any Mora model, and almost all of them cost less than this Svord knife.
