this one's a keeper

This is one useful, sharp, sexy, tough, hot,... okay, okay, I just really like this baby and I'm quite knowledgeable about knives, having collected them over the years in all forms and shapes. In one sentence, this is one BIG knife with a HUGE personality. The kind of purchase you make and they say to yourself that had you made this years before, it would have re-set your standards. The knifecenter price is fantastic by the way, and I also ordered the Svord British Army Golok which is also amazing. Not quite the testosterone package that the VTB though...

Svord VTB Von Tempsky Bowie Knife

This is a solid no frills work bowie. I can take it to the field without worrying about damaging it. I keep it in the truck for emergencies. I plan on taking it camping and big game hunting. I recommend this knife for those individuals who get into it eyeball deep!

The best Bowie out there!

The Svord Von Tempsky Bowie that I got from knifecenter is the best! It is by far the most beautiful and functional Bowie I've seen. The L6 steel is hard to beat. It is what a Bowie knife should be.

Perfect rugged Bowie

Built to last a lifetime. By far the best Bowie knife I have ever owned. Super strong steel, an really sharp, for a big knife! Plus it looks like a real authentic Bowie should back in the 1800's . High quality sheath as well.

Awesome Bowie knife. Big,heavy, good looking and sharp right out the box. Dark hardwood handle looks good and feels good in the hand. Sheath is quite nice-thick,black leather with nice stitching. KnifeCenter shipped my order the same day I placed and had it in hand in two days. Can’t beat that kind of service. Great job! 👍

This Knife can be passed on for generations!

Absolutely indestructble! Best made Bowie (or any other type) I have ever purchased. Would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a good all-around knife for outdoor hunting, camping, utility use, etc. The first time you hold it in your hand, it will become your favorite. The weight and strength of the blade is what impressed me the most. The Von Tempsky Bowie is everything it was advertised to be and more. Great service from KnifeCenter.com, too. The turnaround time from order to final delivery was less then 48 hours!

Absolutely Great Knife

I mainly use this knife to process firewood for the wood burning stove at my home which heats my family and me. This blade is so strong, sturdy, heavy etc etc. I use it like a hatchet no joke and it splits wood so easily and I have zero worry that it’ll break or anything like that. This knife is Expensive for sure but I don’t regret buying it at all. The sheath is suitable and works for sure although I made my own sheath for my Bowie. If you’re considering this knife seriously, I’d say go for it because I waited years and years until I made the move and I wish I’d made it sooner when it was cheaper. Best of luck thank you.

Old School

Hi Guys, here I am again. My first Review was about the Cold Steel Natchez Bowie SK- 5 Steel. Now it is time for the Svord Von Tempsky Bowie Knife. First of all: I like the hole Story about that knife and his former Owner. It is written on a little Booklet that is included the knife. Also included Sharpening and Care Tipps. What I don´t like is, that the Knife came only wrapped in Bubble Wrap. No Package like the Cold Steel Knifes. But it´s incredible.

Impeccable service from knifecenter

A beautiful large knife lifetime warranty for birthday. For hunting, fishing, and fire wood in the evening. The handle slides more than I imagined, but I have more pleasure to find how to dress. I just wish a little thicker and heavier, 774 grams of advertisements, mine actually 588. Impeccable service from knifecenter, speed, package tracking, quick responses to emails, a pleasure. Thank you!

awsome knife

I don`t know what I can say about this incredibly awesome knife that hasn`t been said before. It`s made from high grade Swedish steel it weighs almost 2 pounds the blade is 11 inches long and made by a company in New Zealand. And it`s very very sharp.I put some tentacle wrap on the handle and now it feels real good in the hand. The blade does not have that high polished chrome look to it ,rather it has that rough look to it something you would expect a heavy sharp chopper to look like. It`s an awesome knife and I`m very happy I bought it.

Unbelievable value! My favorite big bad knife, period!

This is an amazingly high quality, custom knife for a very reasonable amount of money. The weight and size of the Svord Von Tempsky is outrageous: this is about as big and bad as bowie knives come. A brute of a tool that was made to be put to work. The convex edge is razor sharp, right from the factory, as advertised. The sheath is of very nicely crafted, thick quality leather. The major con as I see it is that the retaining strap is very tight, and difficult to unfasten, as other reviewers have mentioned, but the leather will loosen over time. Having owned many of the big, bad knives from Busse, Northern Lights, Fehrman, Tops, Becker, Cold Steel and others, this one, the Svord Von Tempsky Bowie is my favorite of the bunch. I will undoubtedly be buying more Svord knives in the future, and I will likely be buying them from KnifeCenter.

This knife is all about function with a cool factor about it

Knife is extremely well made with a working finish. Its big and heavy, its all about function not looks. It will last a lifetime and then some. This is the definition of a Bowie knife. Came very sharp. Sheath is thick and well made, one metal fastener is a bit out of alignment but has no effect on serviceability. I will be using this to clear tumble weed when it is still growing (stringy and tough), perfect size for chopping and heavy enough to cut right through the weed. I never use a knife to do the work of an axe but this one can. I wrapped the wooden handle with para cord, now it is perfect. Great product.

Huge Capable User!

I've never had a knife that urges you to use it like the Von Temspky Bowie. You almost want to go camping/go bush just to use it and put it through it's paces. From chopping down trees and canopy, batoning fire wood and general camp use, there is nothing this knife can't do. Re-sharpening the convex edge can be a bit tricky at first but after you get use to it it's easy to put a lasting edge on it which is shaving sharp. As much as other reviews question it's fit and finish, that's not the point of this knife, it's no safe queen - it's a user made tough to be used. You won't regret purchasing this knife!

Living History United States Sharpshooter

I am Civil War re-enactor with Company C, 2nd United States Sharpshooters and "needed" a period correct fighting knife. The Svord checks all the boxes and then some. The asking for the design and quality is more than reasonable. Cheers, Thomas

Absolute Madness

Normally I don't write reviews but I've been looking at this knife for years because of its unique history and reported build quality, but until now I did not want to pay the price to have it shipped from Svord in NZ to the US. However now that I've got it in my hands I really shouldn't have waited. It's a killer big knife so solidly constructed that it looks and feels it could split granite with only a mild resharpening. The scabbard is a very nice quality thick leather as well. I can wait to use it this summer when I go camping. The only downside is that the blade sharpness isn't as great out of the box as I'd expected from the youtube and knife forum reviews, but I still wouldn't want to be on the business side of the blade. That's an easily rectified deficiency though. All in all the knife is a steal at this price.

What a knife!

I receive my Svord VTB Von Tempsky Bowie Knife today that I ordered just a couple of weeks ago. I tore the box open and could not believe how rugged this knife is. I read as many reviews of it and watched several videos before I purchased it. But I was still skeptical. I especially like the video of the guy chopping up the pallet. Anyway, I am no longer skeptical, but impressed. I don't think I will try chopping up any pallets though. The knife came razor sharp and beautifully colored. It is a very high quality knife. The only negative thing I will say about the knife is that the sheath is awful. It is ugly; black with rivets holding it together. But this is a minor discomfort as I will make a sheath for it myself. I own many large Bowie style knives and I can say that that this is the best of them all.

Great knife. It's a heavy bastard - in the best way possible!

Bought this as a Christmas gift for my son who was looking for a big, Bowie style knife. First off, this thing is huge - in a rugged sort of way. Thick blade stock with nice coloring to it. This knife just begs to be used hard for years to come.

A Keeper!

This is a quality hand made knife that you don't feel is to expensive to be used.It is razor sharp out of the box, differentlaly tempered with a nice temper line visable and made from tough L6carbon steel. It looks like it was made in the 1840's and would serve a Buckskinner or modern warrior equally well in camp or combat For the price, you get one heck of a knife. Handle had a few rough edges that were easily softened. KnifeCenter service was great.

What a knife!

This is an outstanding, large Bowie and a terrific value. I bought it as soon as I knew it existed and would do so again immediately. Very solid and heavy - good for what you would expect. Due to its rugged nature, can actually use this one with impunity - unlike other great and pretty knives that end up as more display pieces than real knives. Received one sheath in tan and one in black. After they loosen up, they will be fine. I only have one real issue - the handle, while long and of good size, is just too thin or slippery to be ideal. The scales on mine are beautiful, but either due to the shape or size, it just doesn't allow for a sturdy enough grip. With more shape or thickness in the right places, it would be near perfect. I still have to give it 5 stars because it is an excellent knife and ridiculous value.

This is a knife

"This is a Knife" This knife is a monster. Knife and sheath are great quality. Very heavy but its supposed to be heavy. The finish isnt the best but this is a work horse not a wall hanger. Could have been sharper out of box. The convex grind is harder to sharpen but worth the effort.

A Very Useful Tool. I like it.

This knife is big, heavy and extremely well made. Although the instructions recommend that you should not use it to chop wood I use it exclusively for cutting brush and hacking trails through my overgrown property. I am going to ignore the instructions and use it for whatever I want and if it breaks (not likely) I'll just buy another.

Von Tempsky Bowie

I've had this monster about a month now. What a beast! Absolutely love it! It looks like it's from the turn of the last century and is a perfect tool for what it was intended for. Sharp as can be and tough as nails. I've used it to chop through brush, saplings and baton firewood so far. Edge is still perfect and it's a great counterpart to my .44 Sixgun in bear country! Only minor change I will make is to the handle, it's a little thin for my hands, but that's just me. Best thing I can say about this knife is "Go Big or Go Home"! JB

Great blade

This thing is a beast. A slab of of beautifully brutal steel. Purchased for the appreciation of it. I don't know how historical the knife really is (Ive seen pics of those bowie's and this really doesn't look like it), but man, it sure takes you back in time. Feel that it was worth every penny. The tab release on the scabbard (this thing is like a little short sword) is tough at first, but breaks in. I found that riding my thumb alongside the tab and pushing off the button works easy for me. After reading many reviews, I expected the knife would arrive so sharp, that it would cut you if you gave it a sideways glance. Sadly, mine wasn't that sharp. All in all I am very pleased with the knife.

Great Knife. HUGE, heavy duty and ready to go.

Got this hogleg of a knife about two weeks ago. It is for my son's birthday and I look forward to his reaction when he gets it. I choose this knife over a Coldsteel product based on reviews of both knives on this website. The Coldsteel Bowie knife was what my son liked at a store. It was rated about 3 or so and the Svord VTB is rated about 4 and half. Great knife by looks and looks plenty heavy duty!

I bought the VTB to be used as a sidearm. The knife is very quick in the hand and I love that it has a full tang handle. It is also scary sharp I nicked my knuckle with it and I didnt fee it. Also dont let the fact that it is a convex edged knife scare you away Svord gives you directions with the knife so you can sharpen it on regular whet stones. The price is also great! I touched the finish up with 400-1200 grit wet/dry sand paper to a satin finish.

Svord Powerhouse

This knife is a hoss when you first hold it the blade is extremely sturdy cleaved a 2 inch sapling clean in half with one strike and was still sharp enough to make feather sticks. The only negative thing I have to say on this product is the retention strap works TO well and doesn't wish to let go but other than that the whole package is very well put together sheath, blade everything. Would for sure recommend this to someone looking for a workhorse that looks and performs like a champ. Knifecenter also came through as a first time customer I was extremely happy with the customer service I received as well as the shipping speed arrived in 48 hours. Will very much so do business with them on future purchases.

Gorgeous and utilitiarian

Received and immediately opened the packaging to reveal this big, beautiful knife. I put it to work on some chopping tasks for fun. I couldn't even get down my driveway before hacking away at some downed maple and live white pine, which this dispatched with ease. For a heavy blade it is well balanced and feels good in-hand. It chops better than my HI kukri (to be fair, the VTB is the larger knife.) It came sharp enough to cut paper down most of its length...it will need some touching up to get it shaving sharp, but it's very much acceptable and came to me sharper than most factory knives I've ordered. The steel is excellent. The retention strap on the sheath is very difficult to remove when new...will hopefully loosen up with use. Shipping from knifecenter was great. I've always wanted a big bowie, and I'm proud to have this as a "working" heirloom.

Could be better for the price...

The blade is sharp, everything is solid with no wiggle after use, and the sheath is pretty decent. The main problem I have is the fit and finish on the handle; the handle scales don't match the tang as closely as I'd expect for the price leaving a noticeable gap where the tang contacts your hand. Hockey tape would fix this but it would also ruin the overall look of the knife in the process. I'd recommend getting a lanyard for it if you're planning to use it for anything serious as the handle is completely straight and without any swell at the bottom it's liable to slip out of your hand. I like the knife, I could like it more if a bit more work went into the handle. 4/5 stars.

I was really happy about the quality of the steel keeps an edge well and shatpens easily but unfortunately the guard came loose and now rattles im contemplating having the guard tig welded to fhe blade, it is a shame the weld will ruin the look of the knife

Impressive knife

An impressive knife at a good price, a great leather sheath, this knife isn't a show piece - it looks and feels like a real workhorse. It only lacks a leather lanyard as the handle is a bit smooth and straight for a knife of this weight (the hole is there to provide your own!) and it would be ready for field and camp use. It looks and feels like a knife from the last century, and the build will carry it to the next one.

Love the knife! the sheath is just ok

Just got this beast of a knife! Haven't used it yet but by the looks of it along with other reviews not at all worried about it's performance. The sheath leather is heavy however the sheath I got had no stitching only rivets. 20 to be exact. I guess they ran out of thread. Anyway kind of looks like a sheath made for Frankenstein' s bowie. Not a deal killer but it's definitely not as attractive as it could be. Oh yeah and one other thing. I read in the literature that misuse is not covered by the warranty then it says not to use it for chopping among other things. What tha? That's part of the reason I wanted this massive thing. Oh well ill use it how I use it.

Great Knife (sheath, not so much)

This would be a 5 star review if it were only for the knife... The knife is simple, beautiful, and really huge. It is manufactured with skill and care. I found this knife on a random search for a new Bowie to add to my collection. I have several others in this price range, but this one was unusual enough to spark my interest. I did some research before purchasing. Learned about Gustav von Tempsky, the forest rangers, etc... Most of the pics I found of the item were stock photos, rather than photos taken by the reseller. All the photos showed the knife and a really nice *sewn* leather sheath. I had to have one!! I ordered and the knife arrived on time. However, I was sorely disappointed to find that the nice sewn leather sheath had been replaced with a poorly constructed, low grade leather, riveted sheath. The knife does not even fit into the sheath very well. Not what you would expect to come with an almost $200 knife. I contacted knife center, and they were polite, but said that the vendor changed the sheath and didn't let them know.... So, disappointed in knife center too.

SVORD VTB

I'm sorry to be a downer on a review of this knife as many rate it highly. The blade steel is carbon Swedish. Nothing wrong with carbon steel if it is heat treated to perfection...no talk of RC on this steel. When you purchase this knife the blade thickness is not specified. The knife you receive could have a thick blade or a relatively thin blade...it seems to be the luck of the draw. When I received mine, and it was not cheap, I put it through some tests. It rated fairly well but edge not great. I understand that this is a reproduction of an historic knife, so handle accepted. However, handle very straight, no grip points in the hand. Blade is very rough...again, very historic...however, very easy to produce. I think blades are very easy to cut out. Very roughly ground...grind lines are way out of symmetrical. Dipped in oil and then back heat treated with a blow torch to produce the bluing effect on the spine of the knife. Two handle scales attached with no attention to finish. I think over priced. To say again. If you want a rustic knife reproduction, it's a good choice, but I would think of many knives I would like to carry that would be of better performance quality than this one. On the plus side, the sheath seems to be of good quality...heavy leather. If you want a reproduction of a historic knife as a wall hanger it's a good choice.

I bought this knife for edc and for camping tasks, I love the knife but svord will not fix the loose handguard instead he sent me a bag of replacement pins. In other words the warranty is useless.

A Beast - but lacking fit/finish and a clear purpose

First, this thing is an absolute beast - for better or worse. Indestructible, but heavy and clunky. I can carry a smaller knife AND and a high quality (Gransfors Bruk) axe, or a machete, for the weight, bulk, and price of this thing, and get more done with those more appropriate tools. I'd still have kept it, due to its sheer personality, but QC issues turned me off, and I returned it: 1. Sheath is sturdy and high quality otherwise, but the retention strap has little material below the stud, and is extremely tight - so impossible to unhook one-handed...and I have pretty good - some would say crushing - grip strength. 2. The swedge is ground at about a 135-degree included angle, which in combination with its curvature (presenting a lot of forward-facing blunt surface area) ensures that it will hang up should you try to stab something. It would take a ridiculous amount of time to reprofile to something that can be sharpened. My intention was dual use for camp/woods/clearing knife and pig sticker, so this quibble my not apply to you. 20% thinner blade stock, and a swedge ground to 45 degrees or so would fix all this, without compromising performance elsewhere. 3. Edge had a nice convex grind, but was not sharp at all. The upper limits of the grinds were uneven each side of the blade. 4. This is obvious enough from the pics, but the handle is straight. You'll want to wrap it to aid retention and reduce shock. The limbsaver wrap that guy on Youtube used seems like a great idea.
