To Whom It May Concern, I've been buying knives for the last 40 yrs. High Carbon tool steel (Bark River's A2) is my favorite type of blade material to use, for most outdoor activities. From my experience, it is tougher than most types of stainless and holds an edge, very well. I use Shun knives (VG10), in the kitchen and they are great! I'm fairly new to "Laminated" VG10 (four years, now). I own two Fallkniven F1s and have been very pleased, with the quality, toughness and attention to detail in their construction. I purchased my new Fallkniven A1 from you, to have a larger, tough, stainless tool for outdoor, wet conditions, which, I've not yet, had the chance to use. I will say, I love the size, quality & flawless construction of this tool! Sincerely, Rob Switzer

About the best knife you could ever want

While a bit large for a general survival knife (something the F1 fits a little bit better), I have trouble holding that against the A1. The weight, sharpness, and quality are simply top-notch. I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said a million times before. Basically, if you are looking for a larger survival knife, this is the one you want.

Fantastic knife

I use this as a hunting/survival knife. Fantastic blade, the VG-10 steel is shaving sharp and edge retention is superb. The knife itself is a TANK, fit, finish & workmanship is flawless. The only drawback may be that for those with very large hands the handle may be a little short.. I highly recommend this knife.

Hard use outdoor knife.

This knife is everything you need and nothing you don't. The blade shape, grind lines, and edges sharpness are perfect. It shaved hair out of the box. The full tang goes all the way through the comfortable handle. The edge is convex, perfect for hard use in the woods while retaining sharpness. The overall heft and handling are just right. The polymer sheath is tough. I would drill a small hole in the end to let water drain out. Otherwise, everything is just as it should be. This knife is my new favorite.

Simple design - one of the great things about it!

Great fit in the hand, made from a thick slab of super steel (VG10), basically bullet-proof survival knife. BUT...the knife rattles in the Kydex sheath - makes an annoying noise (rattle) when you walk making the sheath look nice but basically worthless (game or enemies will hear you coming a mile away). I'll have to make a leather sheath for mine.

Great Product!

WOW! What a Knife, have used it for some light batoning and bush crafty stuff and this thing is a beast. Stupid sharp out of the box. Probably more knife than I will ever need, but if I do need it, very comforting to have it.

The perfect Investment! Worth every dollar and more.

Professional Outdoor Instructor in New Zealand - A good knife is crucial in my work. I have abused a fair few knives, been disappointed by some, and broken others from big name makers. I have beaten the life out of this knife for the last three years, and with a quick polish it looks good as new! The A1 has proven to be an elegant monster! The edge is incredible, and the grind just perfect for everything. I can baton my way through gnarly old wood, chop kindling, then shave tinder, start a fire with my ferro rod, and after all that; am still able to slice tomato for dinner. Sheath is good, but I made a better Kydex one - Just personal preference. If you are trying to decide on this or a cheaper knife in the same field, learn from others experience: You can't afford to buy cheap gear, buy once and get the good stuff - and the A1 is just that!

A real knife

So i bought the A1 as a survival knife and the least i can say is that it accomplishes this mission perfectly - it came as sharpen as a razor - i used it for chopping, making fire, cutting things... - i feel confident with it.

Don't skimp and get an SRK...

Worth every penny even though you can find it for less on other sites (if you trust those random sellers...) Far superior to the Cold Steel SRK. Thicker blade, exceptional balance & heft, best laminate around and the unique concave blade profile splits wood lIke nobodys business. Sheath is modestly ok: I replaced the nylon belt strap with a kydex adapter plate and attached a Bladetech belt clip. Great handle, too: excellent grip and absorbs the shock from any sort of chopping.

Five days in the rain...

I went on five-day fishing trip with friends to a somewhat remote area of Virginia (5 mile walk in after a ferry ride to get to the drop-off point). My friends gave me a hard time for such a large knife on a trout fishing trip...but they were glad I had it by the end! What was supposed to be five days of beautiful weather turned into five days of rain and colder than expected temperatures. To compound the issue, the area we were fishing was in a park that restricted anyone bringing in their own firewood, so options for burnable wood was limited. I immediately put the Fallkniven A1 to use by scavenging some decent sized firewood, which all needed to be batoned to split it down to size. Even in the cold rain, the handle of the knife offered excellent grip, and the weight of the blade was greatly appreciated for chopping! After several days of hard use on this blade, it still kept an exceptionally sharp edge, and there was no rolling, dull spots or rust...my friends were amazed, as they had witnessed me using the knife hard! Is the knife big? Yes. Is it heavy? Also yes, but at the end of the day, this knife has all the features and attributes that could potentially save your life if you find yourself in a tight spot (cold & wet) in the wilderness. My only gripe was the sheath that comes with the blade; but I was able to find an aftermarket sheath w/ a ferro rod holder, so it's absolutely perfect now. You will not regret buying this knife!

Best survival knife out there

I own many knifes for many reasons/purposes. If I could only keep one, this would be the one. Extremely sharp edge than is easy to keep that way. Blade is heavy enough for chopping but is also very nibble in handling characteristics. It is not inexpensive, but once you get it and use it, you will not be sorry you spent the money. If you are a survivalist, hunter, camper, or just appreciate a great knife, the A1 will not disappoint.

Best all-around knife

I have owned over 20 high end knives and this, along with the Fallkniven S1, are my favorite. I have had no issue with the sheath as mentioned by one of the reviewers. Having taken this knife out in the woods on multiple occasions, the edge on this blade has still kept its sharpness. It has amazing edge retention! As long as you take care of this knife, there will be no chipping. Two things can happen to an edge: it either chips or dents. I have abused the hell out of my S1 and aside from the wear and tear on the handle, the metal looks as good as new.

buy it

I bought this knife as a all purpose knife yard work in the woods self defense it works in all roles. the weight is good for chopping and excels on that its just heavy enough to work but not too heavy to not use. the blade quality is outstanding and the grip is pretty nice. the sheath is ok it does its job. the edge I got on mine was pretty dang sharp, sharp enough to shave but not sharp enough to slice paper but that's not a big deal to me it does what I need it to. anyways I highly recommend this knife to military service men or just the average Joe who is going camping and anything in between.

The Last Knife You’ll Ever Buy

I have resisted buying the A1 for many years. It is a big investment. I have reasoned that many cheaper knives could perform just as well. Perhaps, I was wrong. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Missing from Description Above: VG 10 is a laminated sandwich of VG 10 @ 59 HRC, sandwiched between two slices of tougher, softer, more stain resistant 420J2 (probably common knowledge). I have seen complaints of an uneven transition lines in the lamination on the A1; and, have seen a reply by Fallkniven’s president, Eric Hjortberger, that these are ground by hand, so, they will be slightly uneven. The consensus by all is that it won’t affect the performance. Mine came with beautifully symmetrical lamination transition lines. Obviously ground by a true master. This is a convex saber grind/convex edge (preferred by professional guides, hunters, bushcrafters, survivalist, and outdoorsmen, the world over, for cutting/slicing performance, and strength of edge). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I’m not going to fully review this knife. You can scroll down and read 25 other reviews that pretty well explain it. I’ll just say excellent fit/finish/grind/steel sandwich/handle/design. Kraton is my favorite knife handle material (e.g. OKC, Spec Plus Line). Read problem with sheath, next paragraph. Check it out: KnifeCenter.com has such great customer service, that two folks came all the way from Sweden to KnifeCenter.com to get their Fallkniven, A1 Knives. That’s saying something. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is an, “A1” knife, but it comes with a, “C3” sheath. The A1 ARMY Survival Knife rattles in the sheath. No one wants a rattlin’ sheath in a survival knife when they’re stalking game, escaping/evading, or, trying to sneak out of the house pass the ole lady to go hunting/fishing. When a $50 Ontario, Spec Plus knife rattles in the sheath, some folks are deducting half a galaxy of stars. But, no one even mentions it here? Probably, can’t use Kydex/Boltron, as Kydex retention abrades against Kraton (see where Kraton is abraiding against the retention point at bottom of guard in this Zytel sheath, as an example). You may want to shell out extra bucks for the leather sheathed version. I wrote to Fallkniven about the problem, and received a reply back from Fallkniven’s Founder, Peter Hjortberger (Impressive! w/Purveyor to the King of Sweden Seal, that’s how you do customer service, much like KnifeCenter.com). Peter told me (we’re on a first name basis, now : ) to try carrying it first. If I wasn’t satisfied, the boiling water technique would have no effect on sheath, as the Zytel has a plastic (pliable) temp around 200-220C, (392-428 F). He said I could use the heat gun method, but it would void the 10 yr. warranty. I may make my own leather sheath (theirs is double stitched, no rivets) but if, I retired tomorrow, and work 40 hrs/wk on my back-log of sheath making, I would not finish in this lifetime. Still undecided. Fallkniven should look to, Cold Steel for a practical solution to the problem. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Just kidding about the, “Last Knife You’ll Ever Buy.” Now, you’ll want the Fallkniven, A2 Wilderness; S1 Forest Knife; F1 Pilot Knife; V1 Volcano; and of course, the ultimate: NL2 Northern Lights Odin Bowie. So, many knives, so, little funds.

Flawless.

I use this knife for all kinds of outdoor situations, the balance of the knife is perfect, and so is everything else about it eccept for one thing, as one wrote earlier, with a big set of hands the handle could use an extra half inch of length. Other than that, for the quality you get in this knife I think it's worth twice the money.

The Best

Without a doubt the best blade I've ever owned, and thats saying a lot. I've put mine to hard use and every time I use this knife I love it more. Perfect balance, thick spine and incredibly sharp. The edge retention is amazing. My only complaint is that I'm not a big fan of the kraton grip. Although functional, I would have preferred micarta. Those with larger hands may find the handle a bit small also. Truly an amazing blade, spend the money, you won't be sorry.

This Knife is a BEAST

I'm not claiming to be an expert on blades, but I've handled my fair share during my military career and side projects. With that in mind, I've got to say this is definitely the best blade I've ever had my hands on. Depending on what you want from a knife, then that's all on you, but for me this knife is just outstanding in every respect. It's just straight forward and clean, no buzz-saw or bells and whistles, this is just a super high quality full tang blade. I could only think of maybe one or two manufacturers who meet the quality of this knife. Myself, I have small or medium hands, so the size of the handle doesn't phase me. I personally would like to see more handle options.... but aside from that I couldn't be happier with this blade. This chopper will get passed on for generations, my old military issued Ka-Bar has just been retired.

WOOOOWWW

Simply put SUPERB KNIFE. I was extremelly surprised that a blade this thick could shave hair. Great 90 degree spine for ferro rod striking. The convex edge is absolutelly stunning. I just like sliding my fingers across for fun. Handle is some sort of rubbery material which has good gripping on sides. However, the sheath sucks such a shame for a quality knife to have a crappy sheath. In my opinion for the pice it should have had either Kydex or Balteron sheath with a adjustable clip like some Benchmade fixed blades have (ex Benchmade 119 Sibert Arvensis which is cheaper has better sheet and steel. Other than sheet its perfect

Leather sheath defective

The knife was perfect, but the leather sheath scratched the side of the brand new stainless steel blade. There was some kind of metal/hard surface inside the new sheath that damaged my new knife! This was not what I expected from Fallkniven! I would not be able to recommend this product at this time to anyone.
