Super

This Tops knife is super,...if you use it as a knife. Many modern knives are overbuilt and can be silly. They are designed to cater to your fantasies of being Rambo or surviving the zombie apocalypse. I have no problem with that. It's fun. Yet in the days of yore, when men and women ACTUALLY used their knives for ACTUAL real life survival, not weekend warriors or YouTube hobbyists (not that there's anything wrong with that) they used knives that were relatively thin. Look up historical mountain men knives, or knives used by frontiersman of the 18th and early 19th centuries. They had thin, slicey knives. Knives that were meant to process game, clean fish, and yes, sometimes when things got too rowdy at the rendezvous to settle a dispute as well. This knife, in my opinion, was created in that spirit and with that philosophy in mind. A knife that is meant to cut. Not a beater. It lives it's best life in the kitchen doing food prep and it does it quite well, that being said and after everything else I've said, it is still thicker than your standard chef knife and has enough meat behind the blade so that it won't purely be relegated to the kitchen. It is made of 1095 carbon steel and even though it is coated to prevent rust it will still need your loving attention. Ignore the one star review concerning rust. For Christ's sake even Bob Kramer uses carbon steel on his knives! So, to sum up, this is a great Vietnamese inspired knife, that's made in the USA, with tried and true CARBON steel, and would have been no doubt cherished by the mountain men, frontiersmen, and Native peoples of days gone by. The sheath serves it's purpose well, nothing else to say about that.

Tops Frog Market Special XL is sure to be a Winner!

I do a lot of boat fishing, and do most of my own food prep. I ordered this knife because of its slim design, semi cleaver shape and 1095 steel (which I love for it's edge retention and ease of sharpening). So far I have used the knife to chop veggies, fillet and steak fish, cut meat off the bone, as wall as separate pork ribs and chicken parts and cutting/chunking frozen bait. The knife performed as expected. I would still rather use a flexible fillet knife for filleting fish but in all other cases the Frog XL did every task with little effort and much fun. I will keep this knife with me on the boat and in the kitchen as it was a sure winner!

Discoloration and rust!

I bought it new and as soon as I took it out of the case I noticed discoloration and small bubbles on the blade. About a year ago I also bought the TOPS Knives Frog Market Special Fixed 5.25" which I gave as a gift to my son who works as a cook. After about 4 months of use found extensive rust on the blade and handle. I am very disappointed.
