First axe & love it.

I don't anything to compare the M48 too but a vague memory of swinging a large axe when I was a tike, but this axe rocks! The grip is a bit slippery, but you can fix that. I bought for general purpose work, plus I like the tactical look of it. Anyway, took it camping and I had no problem splitting wood for the fire. (Small to medium sized logs) And then I had to use it again when "Sandy" hit the East Coast for clearing and chopping. Great little axe. Even the neighbors were impressed. Highly recommended!

Every bit equal to the SOG

I own two of these now - also a SOG - and it seems to me the SOG is only considered the superior of the two because of the label. I've used both heavily (started out with the SOG based on Interwebz knife enthusiast gossip) and they're both great 'hawks, extremely sturdy, and durable. Only this one is 2 1/2 in. longer, has three head bolts instead of two, nice balance, feels good in the hand, holds an edge, and it is *so* much better looking. Oh, and cheaper. Went camping recently and a buddy went on and on about SOG superiority. After comparing the two, he was jealous of mine. Said he felt swindled haha. For the money, it's one of the best 'hawks around, and superior, to me, than the SOG in every area.

Excellent!

I bought this hawk on a whim as I'd wanted one for quite some time. This was on sale and I finally decided to pull the trigger and get one. I have to say I'm impressed. The hawk is sturday as can be, well made, sharp and appears to be entirely up to the duties it's designed for. I showed a couple friends and they were impressed as well. I haven't put it through much heavy use yet but as soon as the weather warms up and I can get back into the woods it's going to be right at my side. It's a really impressive weapon as well as multi-purpose tool.

United Cutlery M48 Hawk Tactical Tomahawk

The Tomahawk is built very well,it is made with quality material and should last for a long time with proper care and maintenance. The item was on back order and it took quite a while for it to come in. The worst thing with the purchase was the shipping time that knife center used,it took forever to receive my purchase.

Read the description people..

It's designed to be used as is described. Works great for that. Enough Said. As for you "throwing enthusiasts", if you want to throw things, try rocks...some were designed for it 😉

Hawk

Did anyone consider this knife is not meant for throwing. This should be obvious when the handles breaks while throwing. This is for self-defense and breaching. No where in the description does it mention for throwing. It is good as to what is was made for.

Great Quality - could be a little heavier and have sharpened top

Quality seems great. Pictures make it appear to have sharpened edges along the top .. particularly along the spike ... but the only sharp edge is the normal hatchet edge. Is a little lighter in weight than I expected.

This is not a hawk to be thrown by a novice; hitting handle first is a no-no. Thrown well it cuts cards neatly in two. Stock handle is a bit long for throwing, though. I cut three inches off and rubberized the end.

M48 Tactical Tomahawk, good bang for your buck!

Out of the box, the hawk is pretty nice. Although not extremely sharp, I'm sure it could do decent chopping work right out of the box. This is my first Tomahawk so I don't have much background on what to compare it with. The hawk seems a tad top heavy, with relation to the length construction and weight of the polymer handle. The weight could have been distributed better if it were a full forged hawk. The construction seems solid, with three bolts securing the head to the handle. Although I've read that the polymer handle claims to be virtually indestructible, things like weather, physics and the two dissimilar materials makes me think otherwise. After a few throws it's apparent that a lot of practice needs to be done especially getting use to the weight and handling. After reviewing several videos, to me it seems a traditional Tomahawk with a wooden handle is much lighter and quicker than this one. As for a personal defense tool, unless you're a large brawny man with strong wrists, this is a bit heavy for any quick strikes. As for a breaching tool, the spike on the back end could do some serious damage. I tested the spike on an old computer case, and I'm sure this would easily pierce a car door. Overall, a wickedly cool looking hawk and a good bang for your buck.

nice product

I bought this to throw but I'm kind of scared of the handle breaking. Wish it was full tang. It is a bit heavy and bigger than I expected. The blade came sharp out of box the spike isn't that sharp, but all it has to do is penetrate. The sheath is nice it would be better if the hawk dropped into it for quick deployment when carrying on belt. All and all a good tomahawk.

So far so good

Ive owned this hawk for a few weeks. The balance is good. The AUS6 steel used is nice it sharpens up fast and stays that way. Like alot of others have commented it throws well. Ive chopped up 5-7 inch diameter branches pretty fast. The beak is strong and will penatrate hard sheet metal. Will def take along with me on camping trips.

Sweet Blade

I love the tactical axe and it’s blade My main things with it are that I just wish it came in sharper, and the handle fell off to me. The handle material feels good and sturdy. It just feels kind of light compared to the head of the axe and I almost wish it was wrapped in something to make it more ergonomic or give you a better grip. Other than that great product. I definitely recommend it still.

I have had the hawk for a few weeks and what can only be described as abuse is how i have used it and it is grate for the money. i have used it to split wood and to use as a camping tool i am impressed. the only thing not that grate if thrown and the case it came with useless but for the money you really are not getting anything extra other then a grate hawk.

Nice Tool with a minor modification

I put this tool through some paces, and over all, I like it. It has sufficient heft and balance as to provide adequate penetration on many materials, but not so much so as to create difficulty in extraction. Admittedly, I haven't tried throwing it - I've read some complaints about the breaking handles when thrown - because I think there are very limited applications where throwing the tool would be useful. To echo Christopher T's comment, I was disappointed in the smooth handle as well. Should your hand get sweaty, or the handle becomes fouled by Zombie juices, it could easily slip out of the hand. I found a quick application of Hockey Stick Tape yielded an exponential improvement in this issue. I also dislike the scabbard. Seems flimsy and I'd prefer a MOLLE attachment.

The ultimate test

I used this product in a hardcore test. I had a throwing tomahawk target made out of a piece of wood and threw the hawk about 40 times until I grew tired. On my last toss, the tomahawk fell off the target and broke into 3 pieces! The handle broke clean except for a small piece of plastic. The head was fine.

Good head, grip could be better

This tomahawk was purchased for fun and work, and we immediately started by burying the pointed end into a stack of old magazines, to test its' ability to penetrate dense materials. The blade and spike are very sharp, and need to be kept away from boys too young to handle it. Head seems to be a precision casting, and I like the way it is secured within the handle, but the handle itself is too smooth & dry. It could be slightly more contoured or grippy, given the consequences if the weapon slips out of your hand. Definitely not a toy.

Do NOT Throw.

Went out and bought one of these, was told by the knife expert that this was meant for throwing. It is not meant for throwing. I have a full hand made target that is meant for throwing axes, and when this sticks it sticks very well. But when it doesn't, it breaks like a twig. I should have known because this one the medium priced option, but I was specifically told that it was for throwing. I’m going back to all Steel or all wood handles.

Outstanding design, poor quality

This is an impressively designed tomahawk - great looks indeed. Pity it was not made by a quality oriented manufacturer in the US (sure, I know the price would be much higher, but this design deserves it). I expect that after the recent "Hunger Games - Catching Fire" movie (where a modified M48 version was prominently displayed) this product will get lots of traction. If you want a wall decoration - go for it. If you need a tool - forget it. Great design, dirt cheap execution - perhaps some other manufacturer could get it right.

Epic Fail

1. The product will intimidate any one, as long as your naked and chasing them. 2. The product will hack and cut all day. 3. When you throw the product more than ten times, it will shatter in half below the tang or snap in half. The metal is super cheap. 4. The Sheath is a joke. So you might as well throw it out when you get it. Better read some more of the reviews before buying. Other than that it looks mean.

Handle broke on the 4th throw

My hawk arrived today, I was really looking forward to getting it. Out of the box mine wasn't that sharp and I thought the metal on the edge would have been harder ie hold its edge better. I took it down to the hawk board to try it out and the handle broke on the 4th throw. They don't make spare handles and the screws are a real pain to get out if you think you could fabricate a handle for it yourself. It cost me a lot of money to ship this item in and I am really disappointed.
