REALLY NICE

The very first thing I love about this knife is the locking blade. A nice slightly oversized brass liner lock which prodives super lock-up and ease of release when your done. The handle size is jusat right for me, as I have a mid to large hand. I bought the knife primarrily as a grafting tool in my pecan, peach and plum orchard. It is super easy to sharpin on a round set of crock sticks and holds the edge forever, no joke. The shackle lests we weave in a nice piece of buck skin to help pull it out of the pockets that I made on my grafting appron 40+ years ago. It does everything from the Aggie Four Flap to the Slit and Slip in a sheared bub. I must say that I have some much more TINA knives, but this one has become my NEW FAVORITE!!!

first rate in every way

I use a hawkbill blade like this during pollination season in date palms. This knife is a perfect 5. Solid feel, solid overall build, good solid body for the blade, good solid blade lock, great edge. Makes the thinning cuts well and has no problem with the stray thorns that need to be removed as well. Great size / feel for all sorts of other pruning and thinning work as well. This is a keeper. Only minus, the hinge is very tight new out of the box but I'm sure will lighten up with use and I would much rather have it a little tight than even a little loose. First rate tool. excellent.

I have used a Boker Hawkbill for years at work for opening boxes and packages and it worked just fine but it did not have the locking blade or the convenient shackle like the Utica and it was not made in the good ole USA.

I'd Pay More For Vintage.

The hawkbill pruner with brown delrin handles. I love these knives and I'm glad I got this one. This type of knife is my favorite utility tool and I use it for anything and everything including pruning and opening boxes, bags, bacon etc... However, the vintage Utica hawkbill pruner I got off ebay is much more to my liking. The older ones were freaky solid-- the spring on my old one is ridiculously thick and strong, to the point where it's a little scary and dangerous just opening and closing it... if your hands are too small you probably won't be able to open it safely or maybe at all but it has zero side-to-side play and feels almost as sturdy as a fixed blade. it's a beast. The modern Utica pruner is very serviceable, it opens with a decent snap but even a person with smaller/weaker hands can operate it safely-- it's really a shadow of its former self. There is a small amount of side-to-side play in the blade, but probably not enough to be a problem when using. I'm glad I got this knife, but if I'd been aware of the relative decline in quality I'd have sought another vintage one instead. I will add, I'd buy this newer Utica pruner over most other modern knives in the same price range.
