I got more than I expected for my money. I wanted a backup deer skinning knife to my pocket knife. This one is small, will hold an edge and is much better constructed than I expected.

Utica 11-7962 Catskill Hunting Knife

I plan to use this knife for general camp use cutting rope, leather, wood, fish and game food prep. At first glance knife looks good however the factory edge was terrible as the bevel was wide then got narrow and nearly nonexistent at the curve then became more cosistent toward the butt of the blade. The over all edge needed extreme sharpening to shape and bevel. I still haven't got it exactly right yet. I have yet to see how well it holds the edge

Utica 11-7962BB Catskill Hunting Knife

Beveled edge sucked had to be completely reshaped and sharpened this made the mirror finish a waste. handle is nice sheath is nice. Knife after some work took a nice edge we will see how long the edge lasts. use for general camp use rope, game skinner kitchen use etc.

Not that impressed

I own another of your knives with a wooden handle and a longer blade that I like much better. I tried to order one like it but you were out of stock. I ordered this knife instead for my son-in-law for Christmas at the suggestion of your sales person. In my opinion it is not nearly as good.

dissapointed

I really wanted to like this knife, but ultimately I was disappointed. My disappointment falls into two categories: 1) overall fit and finish - where to begin? There are chunks of wood missing from the scales where they abut the bolster - and I use the word "abut" loosely since there are large and uneven gaps where the bolster meets the handle. The bolster itself consists of two squarish chunks of metal but these are out of square and don't match one another in size or shape. I'll be honest, I was almost embarrassed to look at the handiwork anywhere around the bolster. Also, the bolster shape is so big and crude and square edged that it won't fit into the sheath without using two hands, one of which holds open the sheath to keep the bolster from catching on the edge. 2) The blade sharpness - now this is not a category I usually get worked up about since I fully expect to sharpen a knife many times over the course of its lifetime. This blade, however, was sharpened in a weird way - it was so rough to the touch that I was worried I would snag skin when I lightly ran my finger over it. Almost as though it had been ground on an extra coarse wheel and then left like that. It took me quite a while to refine and resharpen before it had what I would consider a normal edge. Positives? The knife hefts well in the hand. I could see it as a real workhorse user around a camp or cabin. But I wouldn't want to show it to anyone.
