Very Handy

How did I get along without this knife? It doesn't matter; I have it now. Though I take along a small, solid fixed blade for hiking and other carry, this is a great accompaniment for that, and a very handy EDC tool as well. The blade is very sharp, opens and closes smoothly, and has no play. So, far, I've used only the cap lifter, which works great. Added bonus: The pebbled handles work great for igniting the old-fashioned strike-anywhere matches, which I have stashed in most of my gear. Really slick. I wonder if the Swiss government had this in mind when they issued these for field use. At any rate, this was money well spent, and Knife Center's service was outstanding as always.

Perfect EDC

I'm a project manager for flooring dealer and I often have to inspect jobs. The awl is the perfect tool to lift up the comer of flooring to see what's underneath it . The rest of the knife is what you'd expect from Victorinox; great blade material, tight, well put together.

Old school multi-tool.

I carried the Spartan for YEARS and used every tool 100's of times. Did I snap a blade every couple years? Yes, but it wasn't the knifes fault, you just get in situations and use what is at hand. Upgraded to the Pioneer when I wanted something more robust and have used every tool 100's of times. At the same time switched to the Climber as a "town" carry and the Pioneer is my "country" knife. The Pioneer at 20 y/o is better than new since I mod them. Haven't had a Climber as long. I had a habit of loosing them in airports. Love the versatility of the Climber, perfect combination of tools without being an overblown everything-and-a-monkeywrench tool. Each of these three knives are perfect in their own way. Some other brands make a knife similar to the Pioneer, they are toys compared to the real thing. These Victorinox models under $30, why screw around?

Simply the best edc

I keep buying "cooler" knives, but keep carrying this one - for pushing thirty years. It has done light carpentry and woodworking, car repair, electrical, food prep., and of course cut string and rope and opened lots of envelopes and packages - the smaller screwdriver blade fits most phillips screws. I keep it sharp, and have honed it on paper to almost razor sharpness. One bad thing: the main blade, which is thicker than most red Swiss army knives, DOES NOT LOCK. So a person learns to be careful. There are things this knife won't do, or won't do very well: it's not a hatchet or axe; it's not a fixed-blade hunting knife; it's a poor weapon (and it does not lock). And it's only sexy to people who really understand what knives are for. But for all-the-time useful and usable pocket carry it's the only reasonable knife out there - which of course is why lots of folks won't buy it.

Perfect EDC

I have nearly a dozen of the Victorinox Alox handled knives (Cadet, Pioneer, Farmer. Yes, I started collecting the different colors LOL) and the Pioneer is one of my favorite knives for EDC. The Cadet is a little less robust and I don't use the nail file much, the Farmer is an excellent folder for outdoor activities but a little thick in my pocket. I find the Pioneer perfect for what life throws at me on a daily basis and I have used the awl more than I ever thought I would. I use the TEC accessories clips to suspend the knife in my pocket.

I use it every day. The blade is actually the tool I use the least. It is simple, easy to carry, and does everything I want. I can't think of an improvement. This purchase was to replace a Swiss Army Pioneer that I lost. I knew what I was ordering. It took me a while to find it.

I've carried this same Victorinox knife every day for the last decade. This one is a gift. Excellent blade steel that resharpens easily and stays sharp. The Alox handles are very durable and the wood saw make this knife extremely useful in the field when compared to other models that do not have the saw. Tasks range from cutting samll limbs around a deer blind to tightening screws or opening cans.

More useful than Cadet.

Larger, more robust than the Cadet, and containing the very useful awl which is lacking in the Cadet. This is the current production version of the 1961-2007 era Swiss Soldier Knife issued to Swiss Troops back then. If it had a toothpick and tweezers I'd give it 5 stars.

Great little every day carry

Used it to repair a shower head bar to pry open the cover and tighten the locking screws (both size screwdriver heads came in handy). Bottle cap lifter is very effective too. Knife blade is razor sharp and the whole knife feels stiff, strong and durable. Above all, the metal handle has a great textured and solid feel; it adds a touch of class to this handy tool. Wish it had a metal file and metal saw but it's just light and narrow enough in the pocket that you don't notice it too much.

Almost perfect

I carry it around for work and leisure; I like it better than the Cadet for my needs. Love the fit and finish. It came sharp enough to shave hair, a first for me from Victorinox. If it had a scissor, I'd be set. A couple things to note: the blade and bottle opener are larger than the 91mm Victorinox knives, and the silver alox is denser and thicker than the black alox. Very comfortable to carry in my pocket and in hand.
