CR2924: 2924 HZ4 - Designed by James Williams

CRKT

Reminiscent of a Japanese dagger, the HZ4 is a tactical fixed blade designed by James Williams for CRKT. Owing to the SK5 carbon steel blade, this knife holds well to heavy use, despite its combat leanings. The blade is black titanium nitride coated to resist wear and tear. The handle is black G10 and is designed for both a secure grip and to reflect the classic wrapped handles of Japanese daggers. The knife comes with a Kydex sheath that accommodates several mounting options.

Well-balanced design
It really walks the line between being an EDC and the sort of ninja thing James Williams is known for. It's just small enough to feel like a nimble and useful tool, but not so small that it's frail. Extremely easy to carry. Finally a knife you don't need to buy an ulti-clip for. Finally a sheathe that practically needs no breaking in before it's got perfect deployment. The design is simple, yet it's clear subtle thought has clearly been put into various features, if you're familiar with Williams' martial philosophy.The only strike against this knife is that it's expensive for a "CRKT knife in SK-5." You are basically paying the premium for the designer and if this is your thing, IMO, it's well worth it.

Great design, held back by the price point
So first and foremost, the overall fit and finish:great. Well executed, sheath held firm(I have sanded the back down to provide a thumb release, and loosen the grip on the knife, but that’s personal preference.) the overall shape and fit of the knife is very good. Here’s where it becomes a bit of a mixed bag. Mine came about butter knife dull. The tip wasn’t even particularly pointy. On this style of knife, for its intended use, that is completely unacceptable. I’ve sharpened it a bit, and it is now at least a dangerous poker. But it will take much more work with stones to get the edge to where I want it. And that should be unacceptable in a knife at any price point in 2025. So, design is great, but man, CRKT is consistent in letting me down on their sharpness on many knives I have owned from them.

Incredible for the price
This knife is flat, light, and grippy. It pierces well - Mr Williams explains in a video why, with the hira-zukuri blade style the entire edge leads to the point. It actually slices well too, due to the thinner blade stock, high grind and distal taper. 1/8" stock is plenty for a knife like this. The blade thickness is what makes this knife, along with the skeletonized handle, weigh so little and balance perfectly. The finish is great, feels and looks like some type of PVD instead of a painted on finish found on most inexpensive knives. SK5 is decent, and good enough for sure. The sheath is perfect, real formed kydex that holds the knife securely but releases with a "pop" when you need it. This knife, being so flat and light, carries easily.Excellent knife, especially for the cost. Highly recommended.
