CRM4002: M40-02 Tanto, Designed by Kit Carson

CRKT

Discovered in a private collection and brought to life. The late Kit Carson's memory is felt strongly throughout the industry—it shows in the absolute reverence the knife world has for his M16 and M21 designs. The M40 everyday carry folding knife is based on a legacy design. This version is reimagined with a Deadbolt lock, marrying classic design with contemporary innovation. Kit's legacy just keeps growing.

Kit Carson turned out a host of game-changing knives from his bench in Vine Grove, Kentucky. The M40 is based on one of his relatively unknown custom designs. In classic Kit style, the stainless steel compact tanto blade is all business. It's met with a glass-reinforced nylon and aluminum bolster handle that's both strong and surprisingly lightweight. The magic happens when you fire it up. The deployment action is quick and smooth with a flipper and IKBS ball bearing pivot system. It locks into place with the Deadbolt and will stay there—enduring incredible stress and weight—until it's simply closed with the prominent button.

The M40 is well-deserving of a spot in this legendary lineage.

How the Deadbolt Lock Works

Steel bolts interlock with the blade when it's deployed to yield incredible strength. A prominent button sits at the pivot point for simple, intuitive disengagement without fingers crossing the path of the blade.

Small but stout
Nice knife, for the sub 3” (2.9”) size, it’s a stout knife. I found out I really like the deadbolt lock, also like how they all allow detent adjustment to tune how you like your knife to open and close. That might be the issue some people have, just not knowing to tune the detent to they’re preference. It’s the T6 screw that’s on just the one side. Smallish knife but the slightly thicker handle is easy to grip and thick blade stock is nice too. The deadbolt knives are meant to be strong not light and slicey say like a Spyderco Delica or the scary sharp and pointy Yojimbo.

I like Mine
Solid knife. Really like the blade thickness, I don't get the feeling that it would give in on me ever. While I'll admit that the flipper isn't as smooth as some other knives I'd hardly think that's justification for a 1-star review.Additionally, the lock mechanism is very strong. Having had a lock fail on me in the past this is another bonus for this knife. It's well-built and I've had mine for a few years now. Edge retention is very good.

Disappointing
This knife was to be a new work EDC, but I would never depend on it in that setting. It is hard to open when it opens, which is only about half the time. Thought it would break in over time, but after two weeks of carry it did not get better.I own other CRKT and they are fantastic. Don't know what happened with this model.
