CS95EDS: American Hunting Spear

Cold Steel

The American Hunting Spear is made in three pieces and it consists of a long steel socket, shaft, and head that are welded together into a conjoined piece. It's sturdy enough for throwing and thrusting and will take down any game in North America. To keep the cost low, and for ease of transport, the American Hunting Spear does not include a handle. It is designed to accept most standard 48 inch Ash shovel handles. Comes complete with a Secure-Ex sheath.

Good, room for improvement.
My first impression of this item was mostly positive. It is reasonably sharp out of the box and the overall design is well suited for tasks involving effective penetration at a distance. Though it resembles a Roman pilum, this is not a javelin. It is heavy and unless you are very strong I would not recommend using this as a throwing spear. Perhaps from a tree stand. It did not come with a handle and I do not know if the handles cold steel offers for their other spears are compatible. The only two complaints I have with this item are that the seam of the socket has barely a two inch weld from the top of the socket. I’m not sure what the purpose of this aspect is in its design, but I would have preferred it to be “more solid”. Secondly, there is no hole to allow for any kind of pin or fastener to keep the socket attached to the handle. This can be remedied but I would prefer the item to already have that feature. For the price, it seems to be an outstanding product.
