Leatherman

21 Tools in One

The Leatherman Surge is one of our two largest multi-tools; a real powerhouse, built with our largest pliers, longest multi-tool blades and easy-to-use locks. A unique blade exchanger, replaceable 154CM wire cutters and four outside-opening blades give you quick access to the tools you use most. The Surge was built for tough jobs and the hands that do them.

Changes for the 2014 Leatherman Surge:

The biggest or at least most notable item is the replaceable hardened wire cutters in the jaws of the pliers. The plier jaws have also been redesigned to be stronger to allow more torque to be put on the handles without damage. Finally, the replaceable file uses standard t-shank attachment point so any hardware store jigsaw blade, file or cutting tool will fit the new Surge greatly expanding the possible uses.

Sheath Sold Separately: Surge models fit most large leather and nylon sheaths - see all sheaths here.

The best knife I've ever owned
I do light hobby work - sawing wood, filing, twisting metal lanyard rings, and opening packages. The long steel blades on the surge can handle any cutting task. The scissors are among the top 2 best multi tool scissors in the world. The ease of access allows you to sneakily cut open a box at work without anyone seeing you pull the brick that is the Leatherman Surge out. The blade can baton a log, but it breaks the lock. The toolset is real easy to access and I use the awl. This is a heavy duty tool that has big, great locking tools. The toolset makes this a staple as a niche hobby tool for an amateur DIYer or someone that doesn't have a better pair of pliers, a better pair of spring loaded scissors, a better pair of blades, or an awl.

Great but not so great
I've been a Leatherman fan for nearly 20 years and have sworn by them. The surge is a quite a disappointment. The steel used for the tab locks is cheap and porous. Mine fell from the top of a 6' ladder and a nub for one sheared off. Now to use the bit drive I have to hold the lock on until the tool clicks in place. The serrated blade snapped at the base under medium pressure while prying a baseboard from a wall. They're still using the garbage flat bits. Mine broke under normal usage far too soon after purchasing it.I still use it everyday and continue to prove it's usefulness to my coworkers. It's a great tool other than being cheaplyish made lol. For $130 it should have come with a bit set and some lube. Good tool, not up to punishing tasks imoWould definitely not trust anything other than the scissors, pliers, and cutters in a tactical situation though. These are perfect for around the house and light handyman work.

This thing works as hard as you do!
I'm a small engine mechanic, and I use my Surge every day at work. When I come home I practice knifemaking and metal fabricating, and I use my Surge every time I go into my workshop. I couldn't operate on a day to day basis if I didn't have my Leatherman. When I was first shopping for a good multi-tool about a year ago, the Leatherman Wave caught my eye; however, I wasn't a fan of the size. It seemed too small. Then I found the Surge, which is literally the Wave on steroids. It's bigger, sturdier, and it has the added benefit of replacable 154CM wire cutters, which is awesome. My only qualm with the Surge is the 420HC knife blades. I wish they made a version with either 154CM blades or S30V. However, since the knife blade on my Surge is my secondary EDC knife, I can't really complain. 420HC sharpens quickly and easily, and is pretty good at resisting corrosion. In total, if you're like the Wave but would like something beefier, buy a Surge. It'll work as hard as you do.
