L.T. Wright Handcrafted Knives

The Northern Hunter series is L.T. Wright’s take on the classic Canadian belt knife pattern and it just might be the most comfortable version of it we have ever held.

The elliptical blade shape that defines this style makes these knives great for more than just hunting and skinning. Use them for food prep, bushcraft, or whittling, and the small version even makes a great EDC!

AEB-L stainless steel provides fantastic toughness and edge stability, holding a great edge without much effort required to resharpen. It is honed by hand to a razor’s edge and at 0.125” thick with a high saber grind, it provides a great cross section of strength and slicing efficiency.

Like all L.T. Wright Knives, the Northern Hunters feature a 90-degree spine for scraping and striking a firesteel. They also feature handles finished by hand to remove any hotspots secured to the tang with a combination of Loveless-style bolts and high-strength epoxy for a lifetime of durability.

The knife would not be complete without a good sheath, and the included JRE Industries leather sheath has good retention and a 0.375” diameter leather loop on the side to facilitate easy carry of a firesteel. Additional rivets allow versatile lashing options. The sheath can be used with the included dangler attachment for drop leg carry. If you prefer your knife to carry higher on the belt, you can remove the dangler, or simply fold it underneath and out of the way.

A great introduction to LT Wright & AEB-L
Over the last several years I’ve spent a small fortune on quality folders from all the major American manufacturers with no regrets. I’ve regarded them as children entrusted to my care with their various steel compositions for observation of their performance & possible improvements as to blade centering & edge performance. I won’t venture into naming favorites. Slowly the realization true appreciation for edged weapons resides in fixed blade knives. So I set about in the pursuit of acquiring something of quality, functional, interesting & new for me. The LT Wright Large Northern Hunter checks all the boxes. Quality in every area, fit & finish is perfect. One of the deciding factors was the steel: AEB-L. I’ve never had a knife in that flavor but being a bit of an metal snob read a good deal about it. All that stuff about it’s purity & ability to attain a scalpel edge: that’s all true. I’m not one to brag but, I’m a pretty fair hand at putting an edge on a blade. I have every diamond slab there is in 5 different grits & I’ve never bought a knife with an edge I couldn’t improve, this knife was no exception. The interesting thing was after a good 40 minutes of extending the the profile higher into the flat grind there was less iron residue left on the slab than any steel I’ve ever worked with. It does indeed deliver an edge equal to exceeding alloys costing 3x this steel. There something unique & special about this. Maybe it’s b/c it’s been around forever & it’s still undeniable good. So that’s my review. If you want a knife that has the qualities worthy of becoming a friend, you might like this one.
