Ontario Knife Company

The M7 bayonet pattern remains one of the most recognizable combat blade profiles of the modern military era. Manufactured in Maniago, Italy by Fox Knives for Ontario, the 494 M7 retains the authentic footprint of the classic pattern while upgrading key materials for improved field performance. Where traditional issue bayonets relied on basic carbon steels, this version uses D2 tool steel heat-treated to 59-61 HRC. The result is significantly better edge retention and abrasive wear resistance during heavy cutting. A flat grind tapers down to a sharp primary edge, while the sharpened upper swedge maximizes penetration and maintains a reinforced tip profile. For the grip, checkered black polypropylene delivers positive traction in mud, rain, or grease without absorbing moisture or degrading in harsh environments. Standard bayonet hardware anchors both ends, featuring a steel guard with an integrated muzzle ring alongside spring-loaded pommel locking levers. Fox pairs the knife with a rugged olive-green molded scabbard that includes a wire web-belt hanger and snap retention strap. It is a precise, durable evolution of a battlefield classic that bridges military heritage with premium Italian manufacturing.

This is what I was issued as an infantryman during my 6yrs of service. I honestly did not use it very often, I usually went to one of my other knives I had strapped to my gear or my belt.I was never without a knife, when I was in grade school until the day I die, I will have carried a knife of some kind. When I did use my bayonet, I used it for what it was intended for. I'm happy to say it never failed me and always performed as it should. Why I didn't use it very often was because the sheath was difficult to snap and unsnap. It could make a grown man cry, the pain it caused my finger tips, lol.
