Are you looking for a high-performing knife with interesting handle materials and genuine Spyderco performance without breaking the bank? Then the Spyderco Polestar is what you are looking for! Designed for budget-conscious users, the Polestar still manages to deliver everything that makes a Spyderco knife great.
The leaf-shaped, drop point blade is made from American CTS-BD1 stainless steel sporting a full flat grind for effortless cutting. Spyderco's signature opening hole allows the blade to swing open easily with either hand, without any kind of obstruction (like thumb studs) getting in the way of your slices. The distal taper inherent to this blade shape/grind combination also makes for a very acute, and accurate, tip for fine detail work.
The most distinctive element of the Polestar is the special G10 used for the handle scales. The top layer of this material features a unique plaid-like or crosshatched pattern. It stands out from the crowd without having to shout, and the textured surface ensures you have plenty of grip to work with.
Furthering the usability of the Spyderco Polestar is a four-position pocket clip, enabling any carry preference, and a strong liner lock for blade security. Open-backed scale construction makes it easy to keep the knife clean while keeping weight down, and skeletonized full liners ensure plenty of strength for heavier use.
Because it offers all the key qualities of a Spyderco knife in a value-friendly package, the Polestar is a definite winner.
Pocket Clip
Includes a pocket clip for easy accessibility and a more secure carry.
G10 Handles
Formed in a sheet under high pressure by combining fiberglass and an epoxy resin binder. These handles are lightweight and shaped to ensure a solid grip.
The Polestar quickly became my go to edc knife. I own PM 2, PM 3, & a Tenacious. The PS is head and shoulders above the Tenacious & to me is a budget PM 2. The fit & finish are perfect & it's obvious that the American steel is better than that of the Tenacious. The action of the PS is almost identical to the PM2 as are it's dimensions. These knives are China made but in a different factory than the other budget knives. Little things like the quality jumping really stand out. The hollow ground blade makes for an easy, aggressive cut, edge retention is good & it takes very little effort to bring back the factory edge. The G10 scales are quality & the overlay is beautiful + adds to a positive grip.
Use it daily. I know it's from China but it's as well built as American or Japanese. Blade is easily sharpened, great cutting shape and is American. If you want and entry level Spyderco you can't go wrong with this blade.
I personally like it more then the tenacious in every aspect and was worth the extra cost for me. I use it for rough use edc, (I carry 2 edc, on occasion 3(fixed blade) as to save edge on nice edc for those gnarly cutting tasks. The bd1 seems to be a good jump in edge retention over the Chinese steel. Though I am leaning toward the alcyone for its size, but I like both models and is becoming one of my favorite no worries rough use edc folders. Sandvik is one of my favorite budget steels though the bd1 is giving it a run for it's money for me. I have 2 polestar's and 2 alcyone's and are consistent with each other in action, fit and finish. Yes you are paying a bit of a mark up for the name. (Thats life) For me it was worth it, And yes i am a big advocate of buying American made items, but other countries make very high quality stuff too, I will say most of my good budget stuff is foreign made (not fond of our American made budget knives) and a large portion of my high end stuff(production to custom) is American made, though the bd1 is becoming a favorite budget steel. Polestar is not perfect but a very good knife it is indeed imo. I like them all, from budget to meticulously hand made works of art.
