VP5976GP: Jesper Voxnaes Key Slipjoint Folding Knife - Purple G10

Viper Knives

Initially introduced at SHOT Show 2019, the Key is the first slipjoint with a backspring by Viper Knives. This new-age traditional folder, designed by Jesper Voxnaes, is a daily luxury to be used without worry and is as important as a classy pen or a fine watch to your daily carry. It's the ideal size to disappear in the pocket and perform adequately when its number is called.

The Key is available in different handle styles, traditional and modern, with or without bolsters, so it can match the best with its owner's style. All the versions have the refined file work in common, which decorates the rounded spring, giving to the knife the typical elegance that always identifies the "Gentleman" Viper Knives. The satin blade - Bohler M390, 3 mm thick - offers excellent cutting performance and long life to the knife.

The handle is available with stainless steel liners and canvas Micarta, G10 or carbon fiber scales. In the Key versions with bolsters, the liners and bolsters are machined from a single piece of titanium which is hardly ever seen on production knives because of the high cost but it's totally worth it. The improved aesthetics when you look down the spine of the knife and improved build quality make this knife a true high-end gentleman's knife. The titanium handle version with its 3D machining is also ultra-refined and has an exceptional visual effect.

Date night, not EDC
With another coherent design, well-proportioned and harmonious to the eye and the hand, Jesper Voxnaes puts one more in the win column! This time it's not headed for the job site, but rather the opera house or the wine-tasting fundraiser (I assume those exist somewhere). I have many knives I wouldn't carry on a first (or fourth) date, but this one isn't on that list. The handle, while slim, is 100% Vox (think Tur or Karakurt), and the blade feels ready for business; sleek but solid, without irrelevant bulk. The half-stop has its own authoritative click, so all good there. The leather slip capably protects the knife from the pocket's other contents and vice versa. My only knock on it is that mine takes a lot of effort to open, enough that with the sharp edge on the nail nick (a missed detail?!), the key reprofiles my thumbnail for me about every time I open it. Hence the 4-stars. All the same, I really like this knife.
