While both brands share engineering innovations like the DuraLock crossbar mechanism, ZT builds emphasize tighter tolerances and luxury materials.

The lineup relies heavily on American-made CPM-MagnaCut powder metallurgy steel for its premium and USA-made models. Kershaw also utilizes Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel on lightweight knives like the Airspace, Blur, and Leek for reliable corrosion resistance and keen edge retention. Entry-level and mid-range options round out the assortment with tough D2 tool steel and easy-to-sharpen 8Cr series stainless steel.

The DuraLock is an ambidextrous crossbar locking system that uses a spring-loaded steel bar to wedge securely behind the blade tang. The mechanism operates via dual textured buttons on either side of the handle for easy left- or right-hand operation.
