Condor Parang Machete

I've used traditional styled machetes all my life ( I'm first generation Cuban American ) and the geometry of the parang is far superior. With the traditional machete it is the force of the swing that cuts through the brush. The curved blade of the parang with the weight shifted towards the end has the blade doing all the work unlike traditional meringues which have a rat tail Tang, the Condor perang has a full tang with beautifully sculpted hardwood scale handle. The sheath is top quality leather professionally its ownwith a swivel belt loop which comes in very handy. I've been collecting blades 40 over 45 years, and I have to admit that I would have paid 3 times the price just based on the quality of this product.

Parang Machete

Excellent tool and well made. I needed a HD cutting blade for the weeds and under brush surrounding my dock by the lake. The length of the blade is just right to reach over the water but not off balanced while chopping. The leather sheath is well made and I was impressed with the quality. I used my belt sander to thin the wood on the handle and 220 grit sandpaper to smooth the grip.

Bamboo killer

I bought this machete a while ago and mostly used it for chores around the yard, but today I took it out for a volunteer event to eradicate invasive bamboo at a state park. The stand in question was over 60 years old and had taken over several acres. Most of the stalks were well over 50 feet high and up to three inches in diameter. It was tough going and the pruning saws we had were not entirely up to the job. I remembered I had this in my trunk and figured it was purpose designed for this task and gave it a whirl. I noticed right away that the heavy tip was allowing the blade to really bite into those stalks with authority. Even on mature, hard bamboo, I was taking down stalks with two strokes of the blade. And the handle really kept it solid in my hand. We didn't completely take down the forest (and we weren't planning on it), but the Condor Parang made short work of an area about the size of a football field in a solid day of work. The ranger was so impressed he wanted to know where he could get one. I, of course, pointed him to knifecenter.

I'm actually using this parang for protection against very aggressive coyotes in our area when walking my small dogs (we've had several attacks on animals and people- including my wife). The Condor Parang seems to be a perfect weight and length for the job, although I hope I don't need to use it. The quality of the parang is excellent, from handle to tip. Balance is perfect. Love the ergo handle. Blade is sharp and finish is beaut. Highly recommend this for protection and/or work outdoors.

Condor Parang,17 1/2" with sheath.

The quality is outstanding, sharpens easily and has a very nice balance.I did put a "safety cord" on the handle. The handle is well shaped and easy to grip and use. Right after the Condor arrived,I took it out back and cut some vines and weeds down. Neets Foot Oil on the sheath to loosen it up some made it much better."Thank you KnifeCenter for having such nice products", Jim.

New skills required

Bought this product recently and used it to chop privet trees and limb the fallen branches. Was cutting mostly ~ 1" thick upright stalks and several 2" ones. Used many swings on the thicker ones, due to unfamiliarlity with the tool and some bad aiming. But it did the work and not a target branch remained uncut. Privet is not a hard wood but cutting the bigger branches is not a trivial exercise. Watch: 1/ How you grip the handle and 2/ the angle of swing. Have had 2 goes at the unruly privet trees now and am getting better. You just cannot slash wildly as with a machete. All else good. It's a strong tool. Had to sharpen it - the factory edge is not good enough. Would like to give it a real test - Manuka! Target is 4 swings through a 2" privet branch!

Condor Parang Nice lines good swing!

I gave my example 5 stars because it shows high quality, good finish (more below), fit, function and form! The full tang blade carries full thickness out to the tip and the edge grind is just fine! As with my Condor Golok, it comes with an EXCELLENT sheath AND I had to spend some time putting a fine edge on it, but it came fairly sharp and would have been usable with the factory edge. My first task was chopping down some pampus grass (I hate those bushes!) to clear a walk through that over grows every year, the light yet tough and stringy blades of the grass were easily sliced after my personal sharpening. No easy cut if you know how pampas grass blades swing and float in the air and yet are tough and hard to break off or tear out. The shears are still the prefered tool for that job, but I did clear my path! The weight of the Condor Parang would like a little more to bite into than "air" and carries the swing though heavily. One demerit for the wood scales, I had to touch up a cople of rough spots with some 800 grit sandpaper I had and then rub down with oil. And in spite of that... STILL a 5 STAR machette! Together with the Golok, a nice pair!

Wow! Extremely impressed

I was looking for a machete to beat up and boy did this exceed expectation. At first glance I thought wow this blade is extremely thick and it sure does look cool. A closer look I was specifically impressed with the handle that seemed to mold directly to my hand. The way the handle tapers really gives you a great grip to swing as hard as you need. The blade design puts the weight at the front to give you extreme chopping power. I'd also like to mention the high quality of the sheath that after a little breaking in really seems heavy duty.

Great for tree suckers and other yard work!

I've never owned a machete style blade before. Every time I look at one, they seem flimsy, thin, bendable and disposable. When I read that the Condor Parang is 1/4" thick, however, I decided to purchase it and see how it might work for some light yard work around the house. Well, I tested it today and the thing is wonderful! It worked better than pruners or loppers for cutting tree suckers up to 3/4" thick! Seriously, the blade is thick enough, long enough, and the weight forward balanced enough that I just saved myself about 20 minutes of stooping over with hand sheers. I even hacked through profuse aspen suckers in my lawn and the Parang's weight allowed it to sink below soil level to cut the suckers below grass level. Much more fun than spraying and mowing (which I've already done three times this season and the aspen, apple, hawthorne and locust suckers keep coming back with a vengeance). I must say it makes me want to find something else to hack through because using this blade is a lot of fun - quite a manly, suburban warrior feel, though I hope I didn't scare my neighbors as I searched for hacking tasks with this noticeably large chunk of steel! It even made cutting the sucker lengths down to 14" fire pit kindling size a very easy one swipe task. Some knife aficionados may want to touch up the blade sharpness as I will now have to do -If only Condor could make a machete that was immune to rock and concrete patio ding marks! But out of the box it performs like I imagine a high quality brush cutting tool should. At 1/4" thick, the Parang also handled some experimental batoning through old cedar wedges I had in my woodpile. I was worried that the narrow spot on the blade just as it emerges form the handle would make it a delicate stress point but no way! The sheath does take some getting used to and appears in need of breaking in as the blade goes in easy enough but takes some caution when extracting. Great tool! I can't believe you get this much quality steel, handle and sheath for so low a price. I'd say buy one now before Condor realizes it needs to raise its prices!

Condor Parang,17 1/2" with sheath.

I ordered my Condor Parang on 7/14/11 and received it on 7/18/11. That is service first class."Thank you KnifeCenter". The Condor Parang came sharpened, you can sharpen more if you please.I used "Neets Foot Oil" on the sheath and it will loosen up in time. I used a very good "Lemon Oil" on the beautiful wooden handle. If you wish to sand the handle use some care, keep it in the sheath or use a vice. The blade is outstanding, the curvature is perfect.

Awesome

I used this to chop up the limbs from several downed trees in my yard as well as spending a day clearing brush. Flawless performance! Not a single nick in the blade. There is a sweet spot just about where the blade gets wider, all the way to the tip, anything struck below there won't cut. I highly recommend this blade

Great Heavy Machete

Does a very good job at chopping limbs and medium branches up to 2-3 inches. The handle is a bit to wide and rounded for my liking. Causes it to roll sometimes if you relax your grip. The sheath is very tight on initial usage. Some oil and use helps a lot. Came very sharp and ready to take down small trees. Excellent tool.

Perfect woody brush clearer

Once an edge was put on it the machete made short work of the 1/4" to 3/4" woody brush we have. The only improvement I could see is improve the grip just a little as it tends to sleep out of your hand (cross hatch wood and provide a lanyard).

Solid brush clearer that is far better then a cheap straight machete

Cleared about 1/4 acre in day and half. With proper use it can cut an inch plus diameter holly (hardwood) branch or about a two soft wood in one swing. It easy takes care of all the cane and sub 1/2 inch brush. The machete is shipped ready for putting your own final polish on the cutting edge which I find odd given it's purpose of clearing brush. The only down side after my efforts is that the handle is too slick and did occasionally slip out of my hand.

Not traditional but great!

So far I think this was an excellent buy, Quality control seems really good. It came pretty sharp from the factory and after using for a couple of hours, it was easy to sharpen. It is pretty thick, unlike the parangs I remember using as a kid in Malaysia. Those were easier to use and sliced better; the Condor splits better. The Condor's full tang construction is stronger but transmits more shock than the traditional rat tail tang. The sheath starts off tight but breaks in quickly. I don't use the second snap; I just swivel it out of the way. In Malaysian jungles, this would not work as a parang would commonly be the only blade carried(and the leather sheath would rot quickly). It works fine for me as I am using it as a chopper and will be carrying a smaller thinner blade.

Wow...so many positive reviews; boy do I feel like the odd man out. I purchased this parang a few years back and it sat, while I used my Linder machete (of which I was a big fan until the blade broke, hitting an unseen rock at ground level). Enter the Condor Parang. What a difference in performance. Just no mojo when connecting. Maybe it's wedge grind, of which doesn't come close to the Linder or my BK&T Kukri in biting into material, or more maybe it's oddly shaped, thick, smooth handle that twists in the hand when striking even remotely off center. I can't tell you how many times this thing glanced off the target intended; nearly causing a catastrophic event. I couldn't hand this to my wife for limbing or really any serious work, for fear of an accident. I really wanted to make this my new 'go to' machete, with its sleek look and forward balanced blade - but when it came down to performing; it fell short for me. If you do decide to give this one a go, take it slow and easy...as I can attest, she'll make you pay for an errant swing.
