A Hunter's Scalpel
I went back and forth on this purchase. Did I want the full sized 3.5” CPM 3V Hunter, or the 3” mini? I wish they had put the full sized handle on the mini. Anyway, this is my first foray into CPM 3V steel. Since it is supposed to be incredibly tough (not prone to chipping/rolling), and suppose to take a keen, hard edge, I thought I would like to put the thinnest blade to the test, hence the mini. >>>>>>>>>>>>> Nice thin blade, excellent compound saber grind, providing a nice, thin edge for low resistance/low drag cutting and slicing, and to put the CPM 3V steel to the test. Love Cold Steel’s Kray-Ex grips, but I wish they had made the handle a bit longer. My pinky hangs off the end. That said, I do not feel much loss of comfort, control, or security, and this is supposed to be a minimalist knife (so, I’m not going to ding them a star for it). Although, this knife could easily be used for bird ‘n’ trout, small game, etc., I think where this knife will shine in game processing is tight, precise detail work like, removing select organs, glands, caping, boning, and slicing through tough, hard to reach sinew and gristle. But, don’t put the Pendleton Mini Hunter on the shelf reserved for such specialized tasks. This knife will make an excellent knife for EDC, and everyday utility. It’s tough/hard edged CPM 3V. You might as well put it to work. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> I like their Secue-Ex sheaths, but I don’t care for the nylon part and the wrap-around the handle snap for retention. It makes the knife less, ‘handy.’ I purchased a Mini Tek-Lok (available at KnifeCenter.com), and will install that, after removing the nylon strap (will have to drill another hole in sheath, no biggy). But first, I will wrap it in leather adhered with contact cement, stitch the trailing edge with artificial sinew, and add a copper rivet to leather just above the guard/quillon as a pinch point for a more secure retention/quick release. The Secure-Ex sheath will become a sheath liner/belt attachment foundation. Now, it’s bullet-proof, and ready for what comes down the pike. >>>>>>>>> This could just as well have been called, ‘Pendleton Hunter’s Scalpel,’ or ‘The Pendleton Scalpel,’ as this is a great knife for detailed work in tight areas. This will make a nice addition to anyone’s knife collection.
