Excellent

I find this John Ek-5 knife better than the Ek-4 and better than the KA-bar 1213 or also known with leather handle as the USMC Ka-bar. As mentioned, the tip is more centered. It has better penetration than the Ek-4 (phone book test) . Plus it has a good edge for slicing cutting tasks. The handle is very ergonomical. The sheath I like the way it is. Better than leather. Carbon steel and wet leather don't mix well..

Straight Forward, Basic, Totally Practical Knife

I've long admired the EK type knives. They've always seemed to be function driven - no fancy swoops or exotic materials, just good, basic, solid design. The Model 5 is no exception. It's well-proportioned and appears to be strongly made and well crafted. It just feels good. As long as it is not abused or neglected, I can see this thing lasting forever. I don't have many "safe queens". This knife will be put to work around my place and on the trails. This thing does the names EK and KA-BAR proud!

KA-BAR John Ek Commando Ek Model 5

I think this is a very good knife for the price. I liked it so much I bought another for a friend. I don't think you will be disappointed. I only wish it came with a nice leather sheath. I will have one made for mine. COOL KNIFE, GREAT PRICE!

New Kabar EK 5, Bowie

I was in the Marine Corps during the 80's. I liked the USMC Kabar but this new EK 5 model is better. If you get it wet you can remove the handle scales to oil it. The tip profile is more forward pointing yet it still has a little bit of belly. This design seems well planned out and I like it. I got one for myself and a couple more as gifts for Christmas. Seems like it would be a great field knife for general use. It also has potential as a fighter.

Broke, bad heat treatment

This knife chipped really bad with the unmodified factory edge in initial testing of limbing a small tree, so badly that it couldn't be repaired. Also, the grip is way too long, the knife only has a 7" blade but the overall length of it is the same as my 8" bladed knives because of the long grip, it's just wasted space and makes it awkward to carry. Extremely disappointed.
