KAEK45: Ek Model 5 Bowie
John Ek Commando Knife Co.

KA-BAR is excited to introduce the much anticipated John Ek Commando Knife Co. product, the Ek Model 5. This updated version of the occupational fighting knife is made from 1095 Cro-Van steel and features a parkerized bowie blade measuring in at 6.875" in length. The textured glass-filled nylon handles are deeply milled for grip and are attached with traditional X-head fasteners and it has an S-shaped guard to prevent you from sliding forward onto the blade. 1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel
An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel (it will rust) and most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.
Zytel Handles

A nylon polymer that is lightweight and extremely durable, Zytel can be shaped and textured to provide excellent grip.

Excellent
I find this John Ek-5 knife better than the Ek-4 and better than the KA-bar 1213 or also known with leather handle as the USMC Ka-bar.As mentioned, the tip is more centered. It has better penetration than the Ek-4 (phone book test) .Plus it has a good edge for slicing cutting tasks. The handle is very ergonomical. The sheath I like the way it is.Better than leather. Carbon steel and wet leather don't mix well..

New Kabar EK 5, Bowie
I was in the Marine Corps during the 80's. I liked the USMC Kabar but this new EK 5 model is better. If you get it wet you can remove the handle scales to oil it. The tip profile is more forward pointing yet it still has a little bit of belly. This design seems well planned out and I like it. I got one for myself and a couple more as gifts for Christmas. Seems like it would be a great field knife for general use. It also has potential as a fighter.
