Alternate application of the Sharpmaker rods
I have found that sharpening, which I really do not like to do, is best accomplished for me with a filing motion, rather than passing the tool over a flat stone. Because of the shape of sharpmakers, they are readily usable in this manner. Also, as the corners are slightly radiused, I can use them for inside curves such as on gouges. The durability of ceramic "files" allows me to have a consistent shape with which to work. Other composite abrasives, and even some naturals, lose their profile/flatness as they are worn away in the sharpening process. It is a joy to have truly sharp cutting edges that need less effort and are therefore easier to control.
