The CJRB Shale uses a combination of its crossbar lock mechanism with ceramic ball bearings in the pivot to make this knife quick to deploy and always ready in hand. The smooth action allows the blade to be flicked open with one hand via the dual thumb studs or the ambidextrous crossbar lock. This knife can easily double as a fidget toy with how much fun it is to use.

About the CJRB Shale Series

With its thin, slicey blade geometry and smooth action, the CJRB Shale is a highly capable everyday carry folder. This series combines practical utility with a robust crossbar lock for an exceptionally responsive handling experience.

What steel is used on the CJRB Shale?
The CJRB Shale series utilizes AR-RPM9 stainless steel, a proprietary powder metallurgy (or “spray form”) steel developed by CJRB Cutlery. This steel is formulated to offer significantly greater toughness than standard 9Cr steel while still maintaining excellent edge retention. Combined with the series' thin blade stock and full flat grind, this steel allows the Shale to perform as an exceptional slicer.
What type of lock does the CJRB Shale have?
The CJRB Shale uses an ambidextrous crossbar lock. This mechanism allows you to easily deploy and close the blade with one hand, either by using the dual thumb studs or by pulling back on the lock bar. When paired with the ceramic ball bearings in the pivot, the action is incredibly smooth and highly fidget-friendly.
Is the CJRB Shale good for everyday carry?
Yes, the CJRB Shale is an excellent choice for everyday carry thanks to its versatile blade shape and pocket-friendly design. It features a 3.15-inch clip point blade that behaves similarly to a drop point for general-purpose utility work, alongside a reversible, deep-carry pocket clip that allows it to sit low in your pocket.
What are the handle materials and color options for the Shale?
The CJRB Shale features G10 handles with a clean, faux-inlay milled pattern that provides a solid grip for most hand sizes. Color configurations include OD Green, a Black and Red option, and a Blue and Orange version that comes finished with a black-coated blade and matching black hardware.
