Cold Steel

By the mid-1600's dueling was at the height of its popularity. In fact, this trend for settling affairs of honor with steel reached such heights that King Louis XIII of France outlawed dueling for fear of losing too many of his important dignitaries to this dangerous pursuit!

Aristocratic noblemen saw it as their manly duty to defend their honor at sword-point, and as such began not only seeking out the knowledge and training imparted by specialist sword masters, but also exploring new types of weapons to help them gain a decisive edge.

One particular sword began to gain popularity - a smaller, lighter and faster version of the Rapier that was easier to carry and quicker in combat. A precursor to what would eventually become the smallsword referred to by many simply as the "transitional rapier".

Cold Steel's interpretation of this blade (which they have named the Cavalier Rapier) features a sharp double edged and needle tipped blade which is decidedly shorter and lighter than a classic rapier, allowing for much more speed and agility.

With a tempered steel pierced shell guard, rings, quillons and knuckle bow it offers astonishingly good hand protection, while its wire wrapped grip and counter balancing pommel give great comfort and liveliness in-hand.

Overall Good Deal.
I needed a rapier to fill a gap in my small collection and I have always had good luck with Cold Steel. I was a bit wary since Lynn Thompson has moved on to better things, but the price was right so I ordered it. It was on back-order, so it took a month or so to arrive, but I was very pleased with the sword when I hefted it and consider both the price and the wait worthwhile. The wire wrapping on the handle was very well done with no hotspots, and the blade was sharper than I had anticipated. The balance is decent, the scabbard is good quality and the handguard very attractive as well as functional. Long ago I was a fair hand at fencing with foil and saber, and I thought I might like to try rapier, so here we are. If it performs as well as it looks it will be fun. I highly recommend this sword.

Rapier Great Scabbard Poor
Can not insert blade fully into scabbard. Have been working to correct this with little success. Upper ferrule came unglued. I reglued it rather deal with sending it back.The blade is well made, has a nice balance. Just wish it fit the scabbard.Use: Display and practice.
