Description

CS88G: 88G Gim Sword

Cold Steel

There are two basic types of straight-bladed swords used in China. One is fairly long and heavy, known as the Wu Jian or "Martial Sword". The other is substantially lighter and called a Wen Jian or "Scholar's Sword" and was primarily carried for personal self-defense.

After studying books and video tapes on the history and use of both weapons, we have decided to make our own battle-worthy Gim (Wu Jian) for serious collectors and practitioners of Chinese Martial Arts.

The blade of our Wu Jian is made out of 1055 Carbon steel and measures 30" long by 11/8" wide. For cutting and slashing, both edges are quite sharp, and they terminate in a strong, useful point for stabbing. The traditionally styled guard and pommel are cast out of thick, sturdy brass and fit snugly on a stout Rosewood handle that is both highly decorative and functional.

The Gim Sword comes with an excellent wood scabbard with brass throat, chape, and sword rings, and can be worn suspended from the belt or slung over the shoulder.

Pros: Blade Material, Handle Material, Materials, Overall Quality, Usable
Cons: Finish, Sheath/Scabbard
Very good, points off for some damage
Very good gim/jian, was surprised at the build quality considering its so hard to find an affordable but functional jian. Had to deduct some points cause while overall the scabbard is good, the one I got had minor splits along the side near the top that I had to fix with some epoxy and clamps. Felt like the scabbard in this case was a liiiiittle too tight and the sword was jammed in, causing the split no one noticed. The metal furniture though held it together just fine, but couldn’t give it a perfect score because of that, and that while its got decent sharpness from the factory, edge is a smidge ragged and needs to be refined a bit by hand. but that latter part I expect from a lot of swords these days.

Solid product at reasonable price
I was looking for a battle capable Chinese straight sword to potentially gift to my Kung Fu black belt son. Over the years mostly what I have found were poorly made cheap Chinese swords made with inferior materials and flimsy construction. If I had wanted a Japanese style sword it was easy to find, but for my Chinese heritage family I wanted a Da Jian. Finally found this sword. Nice materials, sharpened blade that will actually cut things. Scabbard is nice too. Nice product for the price point. Quite happy.
