CS90TA: 90TA Trail Boss Axe

Cold Steel

The Cold Steel Trail Boss Axe is compact enough to carry all day in your hand or strapped to your pack, yet tough enough for chores that would make a hatchet or tomahawk scream for mercy. Featuring a European style head with a 4" blade and a 4.5" cutting edge, it takes a big bite with every swing. Plus, it features a very sturdy, durable straight-grained American Hickory handle. In our extensive field-tests in the outback of Australia, the Trail Boss was used to chop kindling, clear roads and trails, to build blinds and even to chop down a fair sized tree!

Wood grain will vary from piece to piece.

Great but needs work.
If buying this axe you should know a few things first. This axe doesn’t come with a sheath, collar, or a wrapped grip. Also, most importantly, the edge is fairly sharp but you’ll need to file the bevel a bit deeper to cut anything deeper. At its best the Trail Boss is light, very sturdy, and balanced well on the blade end. I wouldn’t recommend it for felling trees, but it can handle most branches and dry logs very well. I’d definitely recommend wrapping the handle for a grip as the wood is very smooth. Also keep the blade dry and clean to prevent rust. For the price it’s definitely one of the best camping tools you can ask for.

Great fit for my kit
This Jack of all trades is a great tool for a variety of scenarios. It’s mid-size and weight makes it ideal for backpack carry and still performs well at big and small tasks. I find that it pairs perfectly with my Silky Saws Katana Boy. The carrying case for the saw has a secondary sleeve meant for a spare blade but is also just the right size to accommodate the handle of the trail boss, making for an ideal carry system for building shelters or harvesting fire wood. You could spend more money on a more reputable axe but this one works really well without a high price tag.

Best axe ever for the money.
Totally worth it. One in the truck, one mounted on my motorcycle, one by the bed, ten more in the garage (I found them for twenty a piece). This axe swings easy and performs like a heavier axe. She bites wicked deep and throws big chips. Holds a good edge and doesn’t chink easily. Others have complained about bad handles but I think they may have just been dry. Handles are replaceable, it’s a good price for the head. Before use I always strip the varnish and soak the head in linseed oil.
