FT13603: Morakniv Classic No. 1/0 - Red

Morakniv

This is a real classic handicraft knife that has been part of the Swedish handicraft tradition for over a century. It is also easy to sharpen, which means that you can experience it over and over again.

With a barrel-shaped red-stained birch handle and a 0.08" thick carbon steel blade, no task is impossible. The polymer sheath has a polished finish and is clad with the Dalecarlian coat of arms. Complemented by a belt loop of Swedish vegetable-tanned leather, it is designed to withstand the test of time for generations to come. Carbon steel rusts, so wipe and oil the blade after use. These characteristic craft knives with red-stained birch handles were first introduced about a hundred years ago with the ambition of imitating an exclusive mahogany-handled knife. Since then, the Morakniv Classic has grown to become one of the most beloved lifestyle knives in the world. A timeless Morakniv knife in its purest form. Generations of craftsmen and artisans throughout history have used, personalized, and refined the knives to meet their own needs, making the Morakniv Classic a part of unforgettable memories and an invaluable part of the future.

Just what you need and no more
This is my favorite knife for backpacking. I thought about the pros and cons, and there are really only pros for this specific purpose. The carbon steel takes (and comes with) a wicked edge and is easy to sharpen while being pretty tough. I haven't had any problems with rust just wiping it down with oil every once in a while. The crisp spine strikes sparks on any suitable rock - it works great with local quartz. The blade is big enough to do some hard work (I wouldn't use it like an ax, but it handles everything I actually need it to handle). The grind is great for whittling at camp, and the blade is thin enough to slice well too.The handle is comfortable in a lot of different grips, and is just big enough to fit well in my (long but thinnish) hand. It's also really light, which is what I think elevates this Mora above the Companion and other models for hiking/backpacking specifically. The whole deal comes in under 2 oz. You could make it even lighter by removing the leather tab from the sheath, but I left it so I had the option for belt carry even though I usually leave the knife in my pack until setting up camp.Fit and finish are as good as all the Mora knives I've had - so, excellent - and the price is right. There's just no reason not to like it.
