OH7026:  Old Hickory 5.5" Hunting Knife

Ontario Knife Company

The Old Hickory line has long been a favorite for modification by end users. Bushcrafters and outdoorsmen love the heritage, the American-made quality, and carbon steel for outdoors pursuits, often taking the butcher knives and shortening them to a more usable length and adding a sheath for easy carry.

Seeing this, Ontario has seen fit to release a factory-ready version, featuring a 5.5" clip point blade with flat grinds and a swedge. With the addition of a quality leather sheath, this knife can be taken right into the field for hunting, survival, and bushcraft, and of course, it still works great for butchering and food prep.

History

First introduced in 1924, the Old Hickory knives are the most venerable product line still in active production. The Old Hickory knives feature a hardwood handle secured with brass compression rivets to high carbon steel blades that are both very sharp and capable of retaining an edge better than most stainless knives. Proudly manufactured with artisan processes for over 90 years, Old Hickory has stood the test of time and is proven to be the best carbon steel kitchen cutlery sold today.

Great knife
I use this knife for camping, hunting and outdoor activities. I like the basic, old-school design of this knife. And I like the reasonable price of this knife, which is much too hard to find in today's knife market.

Great General Purpose Kitchen/Camp/Hunting Knife
Purchased as a gift for my brother. I also have one. They take a keen, long lasting edge. Beautiful piece of classic Americana.

Great value, as expected
I’m not sure what QC issues to lower-rated reviewers are speaking of, other than the “meh” sheath, which is just...okay. The knife itself, however, is just as I expected. I own many Old Hickory knives, so I knew what to expect and also knew what QC things to look out for from my other knives, primarily the edge. Handle is smooth, corners rounded, full tang. Straight stock from tip to tang. A typical, nice Old Hickory knife. Not as thick as my old Old Hickory knives, but still good. The edge geometry, like most of the knives I’ve gotten from OH, was far too steep, but a few minutes on my diamond stones and strops and that fixed that issue. It WAS decently sharp out of the box, but now it’s a bit scary. The sheath is fine, nothing to write home about; the knife blade does feel a bit to broad for the sheath, but at the price it’s not a big deal and certainly does not detract from the knife itself. Overall I’m very happy with it, as with my other OH knives.
