Spyderco's incredibly popular line of Value Folders takes a different turn with the Astute. Although it shares the same basic construction and materials as its brethren, it features a sleeker, more stylish design that is amazingly pocket-friendly. The long, gently curved cutting edge and full-flat grind of its 8Cr13MoV stainless steel blade give it impressive cutting power and point utility. Its ergonomic, open-backed handle features full stainless steel liners for strength and textured G10 scales to ensure a secure, non-slip grip. The sturdy liner lock mechanism locks the blade securely when in use and a four-position pocket clip and lined lanyard hole allow all possible carry preferences. Simply put, the Astute sets the standard in affordable Spyderco style.
8Cr Stainless Steel
One of the most common budget stainless steels, it maintains a competitive combination of edge retention and toughness in its price range.
Pocket Clip
Includes a pocket clip for easy accessibility and a more secure carry.
G10 Handles
Formed in a sheet under high pressure by combining fiberglass and an epoxy resin binder. These handles are lightweight and shaped to ensure a solid grip.
Overall this is a good knife for the price. Out of the box it was sharp, well put together, but was a little hard to open especially with one hand. I opened and closed the blade for about 5 minutes and it worked itself loose to where it can be easily opened and closed one handed now. The blade is shaving sharp from the factory, is thin behind the edge, but doesn't chip or bend when cutting into and whittling oak.It has good cutting characteristics. Paper, tape and cardboard are cut easily and whittle hard wood without losing the edge. I like the feel of the handle, the textured G10 feels nice and secure in the hand. I have large hands and in ice pick or hammer grip I can get 3.5 fingers on, but the butt is smooth so its not uncomfortable. In handshake grip I can only get 3 fingers on but I also get the support of thumb ramp which makes it feel secure and once again the shape of the handle didn't make it uncomfortable to have my pinky off the handle. The blade is slightly off center but not enough to really matter. The hardware is secure and feels robust but isn't intrusive. It's a decent little knife and for 50$ its not a bad deal. Its well designed and put together well.
