The knife industry loves acronyms and one frequently seen is the term FRN. It means “fiberglass reinforced nylon” which is a plastic material used in manufacturing knife handles because it's lightweight, longwearing and not prohibitively expensive. One of the byrd line's cornerstone models, the Meadowlark is available with FRN handles.
The FRN Meadowlark Hawkbill has slip-free texture, deeply molded into the plastic so it won't slide or move around in the hand. Nested inside the handle are full-length steel liners adding rigidity and strength without unnecessary weight and phosphor bronze bushing for smooth open/close. The 8Cr13MoV stainless steel hawkbill blade is with a comet shaped hole so the folder opens and closes one-handedly. On top of the blade's spine is a series of crosshatching the knife industry calls jimping. Jimping creates tactile resistance, gripping the thumb and keeping it in contact with the top of the blade while cutting. Features a 4-way pocket clip for left or right-handed, tip-up or tip-down carry. Cut out of the lock's release is a safety feature called a David Boye Dent allowing you to tightly grip the handle without fear of accidentally releasing the lock.

Lockback
The lockback system has been used for many decades. It can usually be found on the knife spine and it provides a strong lockup that will wear well.
I cut more baling twine than anything else. Serrated edges work much better than plain edges. When the twine is really tight and deep into the bale of hay, a narrow hawkbill point is great for getting to the twine instead of cutting hay. The Meadowlark is the best knife I have found so far for this task, although the more expensive serrated Spyderco hawkbills would probably be excellent also.The Meadowlark came out of the box sharper than a lot of Spydercos and well centered with no blade play. The serrations are ground as nicely as those on Spydercos costing 5 times as much money. 8Cr13MoV is a decent inexpensive steel, especially for a serrated blade, because serrated edges need sharpening less often than plain edges.The only problem I have had with it is that the action was very stiff originally. I loosened and lubricated the pivot without much improvement. After taking the knife apart three times to adjust the back spring, it Spydie flicks fairly well, but not as well as any of the compression lock Spydercos that I have.If you want a strong tip, do not buy a hawkbill. If you want excellent finish, spend a lot more money.If you want a knife that is perfect out of the box, a Spyderco is a gamble, especially the budget Byrd line. Be sure to buy from somebody who will let you return a defective knife, such as KnifeCenter.
Overpriced, poor manufacture quality, hard to find Hawkbill under 3”
I received an item with the pocket clip screws stripped from the factory, where I could not remove them. The blade is not razer sharp. This would be a decent knife at $15. It is lightweight and finding a serrated hawkbill under 3’’ is extremely difficult. The Tasman Salt from Spyderco has a nice build quality but the H1 steel is terrible for edge retention and hardness for the price and is pretty much only useful if you need a speciality steel for salt water. Hence, this knife. If the screws had been ok, I would have rated it a 3 at this price. I am wondering what else about this knife was manufactured poorly even for a Chinese knife. I have a $8 knife from Harbor Freight that is higher quality.
