Byrd knives are the subject of several bright and fresh engineering refinements for 2010 with improved ergonomics, four-way clips and full-flat ground blades. Like Spyderco knives, byrd knives are subject to our penchant for C.Q.I. - Constant Quality Improvement. As manufacturing processes and material availability improves, so do the byrds.
The newest evolution of the Cara Cara has a full-flat ground high performance 8Cr13MoV blade. Shaped like a “comet” the hole in the blade symbolizes quality and careful manufacturing tolerances. On the blade's spine is a group of crosshatching called jimping. Jimping enhances the thumb's grip on top of the blade making cutting slip-resistant. Available for the first time with a four-way clip that carries tip-up/tip down or left/right-handed, it attaches inside a pant's pocket where it rides deep and confidently. Its skeletonized stainless steel liners and textured, injection-molded FRN handles provide the ideal combination of light weight and a secure grip, even in the most demanding environmental conditions.
Features
Ambidextrous tip-up/tip-down clip
Spine and choil jimping
Skeletonized nested handle liners
Screw construction
Phosphor bronze bushings for smooth open/close action
8Cr Stainless Steel
One of the most common budget stainless steels, it maintains a competitive combination of edge retention and toughness in its price range.
Zytel Handles
A nylon polymer that is lightweight and extremely durable, Zytel can be shaped and textured to provide excellent grip.
Pocket Clip
Includes a pocket clip for easy accessibility and a more secure carry.
Lockback
The lockback system has been used for many decades. It can usually be found on the knife spine and it provides a strong lockup that will wear well.

Great Budget Alternative to the Spyderco Endura
The Cara Cara 2 comes from Spyderco’s dedicated budget brand: Byrd Knives. The Byrd Knives brand is technically a distinct entity from Spyderco, but it brings all the signature elements of the Spyderco design language to a lower price point. The Cara Cara 2 has the same overall size and blade length as a Spyderco Endura, but with more budget-oriented materials and construction. The blade steel is 8Cr13MoV, and comes in either plain edge or partially serrated. The handles are fiberglass reinforced nylon (available in several different colors, naturally) and they offer a ton of grip thanks to a bi-directional texture much like the upmarket Spyderco. One thing they’ve done with the Cara Cara 2, unlike the Endura on which it’s based, is the addition of a forward finger choil divided between the front of the handle and the heel of the blade. This “50/50” choil eliminates the dead zone around the pivot that most folders have to contend with and turns it into a place that can be used for choking up to get more fine control over the blade. The mid-back lock is easy to open and close one-handed, and it’s completely ambidextrous. With the ability to mount the clip in any orientation (tip up/down; left/right), this is another great option that I can recommend to just about anyone.

If only this was still $20
I own several Byrd knives and all of them are well worth the price I paid. That was only a couple of years ago. Now they are double that. Just fyi.

Sloppy edge grind
This is a follow-up after taking a closer look, but I'm sorry to say the edge grind is sub-par. On the right side the angle changes, becoming much wider toward the tip. On the left the edge narrows considerably toward the tip. It's one of the sloppier factory edges I've seen. Yes, like I said, it's sharp, but although it's not a defect and I can fix it, the factory edge tells you something about how much pride the makers take in their product. I can live with it, it's not fatal, but if it would bother you too much you might want to look elsewhere.
