White River Knives

The Firecraft series is designed for heavy use in real survival situations; these also make excellent camp, hunting, backpacking or utility knives. The deep finger choil protects your fingers while applying pressure whittling, cutting or chopping. Atop the blade is a notch for the efficient striking of an included ferro rod and it features a polished stainless steel divot for use with a fire bow. This is a well-designed, great looking, and robust knife intended for serious work.

The FC5 measures 10" overall with a 5" blade made from CPM-S35VN stainless steel. Its wide blade and thin handle make it great for all sorts of outdoor/survival applications. The handles are made from green Micarta over orange G10 spacers, attached with tube style pins allowing you to lash this knife to a stick if necessary. The Kydex sheath includes a dangler belt loop attachment, ferro rod holder, and ferro rod. The sheath design is contoured to frame the blade profile for a reliable hold and sleek, lightweight wearability. Designed by Jason Tietz and manufactured by White River Knives in the USA.

A Great Knife, disappointed in the sheath
I am a hiker and I chose to take this knife for backpacking through the Smokies. The Knife itself held up very well, kept its edge and has a great balance. The leather sheath that came with the knife however, was not as sturdy. The top loop that you would slide your belt through to wear on your hip complete broke off after the first day on the trail. I then had to use the lower hoop that is connected to the brass ring which, made the knife a bit higher on my hip. This actually worked out well as I found the knife in the leather sheath to flop a bit on my leg. Also, the flint rod MUST be taken out and put in a safe place in your pack or, reverse it so that the side that you hold is facing up. If left facing down like the picture shows, it will slide out.It appears that they now sell this knife with a different sheath so perhaps it is more sturdy. I just don't know if I can trust it and when you spend 250.00 on a knife, this should NOT be an issue.

Pros: Sheath/Scabbard, Finish
Cons: Blade Sharpness
It's alright.
I'm a weekend adventurer and do some bushcraft when I'm out backpacking. It's very good for fire prep work but the handle ergos are kinda off for other bushcraft work. My dangler came with the button missing right out of the box so that was disappointing. The edge was not very sharp so I also had to touch it up. The kydex sheath is pretty darn awesome. It's a good knife but for the money there are way better options (ESEE and my favorite, Dark Timber). It'll go into my emergency truck kit and sit there for a just incase knife.

One of my go-to favorites
I have the newer version that is made in S35VN, but it is otherwise identical. This knife has quickly become one of my favorite knives in this size range. It is hair-shaving sharp from the factory. The design of this knife is very good, both from a functional standpoint, and in aesthetics. The green canvas handle scales, combined with the orange G-10 liners, along with the stone washed finish on the blade, give the knife a very utilitarian (and cool) appearance. I have not used the bow drill divot yet, so I cannot speak to that feature yet. Although conceptually, I like the fact that it is lined with stainless steel. The ferro rod cutout on the back of the blade does a good job making sparks, although the flat part of the spine works a little better. The thickness of the blade is significantly thinner than some of my other knives. I wonder if it will be as durable as my thicker blades, but I suspect it will be just fine. It's definitely good for slicing. The only nitpick that I have is that I wish it had an exposed pommel at the end. I don't often hammer objects with my knife, but I do on occasion and would like the option to do that. Other than that, it's hard to find fault with this knife. Oh, the Kydex sheath is fantastic too. It is probably the best designed and crafted Kydex sheath that I have. The fit is perfect, as the blade snaps in and out of the sheath very smoothly. Overall, I highly recommend this knife if you've got the funds.
