XTM4328: Small Swiss Hatchet

Swiss Military Surplus

If you can handle the weight, a hatchet is one of those tools you'd trade many others for in a survival situation. It can perform all the duties of a good saw, a large fixed blade, and a small survival knife. If sharpened correctly, it can also feather a stick and create some extremely fine kindling. This is one of those hatchets that can do all this and more. The 13" hardwood ash handle has a straight profile, and the 3.5" head is superbly attached - that sucker isn't going anywhere. Swiss-made, so you know the stainless steel will perform as well as any for both edge retention and corrosion resistance. It has an extremely nice feeling, whether you're holding it an inch away from the head or an inch away from the butt end - it's just very well balanced. Of course, it's got a hammer pommel on the other side of the head for banging in tent pegs, and the entire package weighs 2.25 pounds without a sheath.

Great for the money
I use this in my survey work. Cuts branches & saplings, drives stakes & signs. Takes a good edge with a file in the field. I think I could get a very good edge if I spent some time with it in the shop. It gets abused like any work tool. I’m getting my money’s worth.

It Stinks, and it's Perfect!
When you first get this it has the Ol' Mil surp smell. It's a cheap way to get some re-profiling/refinishing practice. After an hour of sanding/B.L.Oing and some file/stone work on the edge this is a 25.00 axe that hits harder than axes in a higher price range. Now to find an edge cover...

Meh. And beware of the stench.
Quite disappointed. Basically just spent $22 on an axe head that's mediocre. The whole axe is mediocre. I'm surprised how hard it is to find a good hatchet. I wanted carbon steel but settled for stainless. It's OK it works. It needs a sand, sharpen and a linseed laqouring. Quite uneven handle. And blade. Held together with wood no metal hardware.
