BCC338L: C338L Farmhand Lockback, Yellow Delrin

Bear & Son Cutlery

The Bear & Son Locking Large Farmhand is a lightweight, traditional folding knife that is a staple design in Bear & Son's lineup. The 1095 carbon steel blade is an endlessly useful drop point design and is equipped with a nail nick for easier opening. The handles of these pocket knives have been changed to Delrin for a grippy and light experience while using them. A sturdy lockback mechanism and deep carry pocket clip complete this knife for a reliable companion that never goes out of style.

Information from Bear & Son Cutlery

Bear & Son Cutlery is proud to manufacture its 4th Generation Series, made of high-polished 1095 carbon steel blades and popular Yellow Delrin handles. The 4th Generation name comes from the style of knife I remember my Pap sitting on the front porch on Saturday afternoon, listening to a Braves game on the radio, and peeling an apple. I would try to peel that apple without breaking the peel. My Papa Griffey would always accomplish this seemingly impossible task. I can also remember sitting with my Papa, Dad, and Uncle whittlin' a piece of cedar. I can smell that pile of fine shavings at the end of the day.

Cons: Handle Feel, Handle Material
The modern result of an old folding knife, a strange result
My appreciation of this knife is guided by a little deception at the opening of the box. Actually I own a Case Sodbuster and I wanted a similar knife with locback, something like a Farm & Field Bullnose from GEC in a cheaper version. So I was very surprised to discover that the Bear & Son Farmhand is a very modern version of this traditional folding knife: no liners at all, no Delrin but G10. The result is not bad for sure, very light, but missing this well finished touch of brass liners. This knife is built like some Cold Steel models (American Lawman for example), the handle is only two G10 pieces (and very square, not rounded like the usual design in Delrin). It is a modern knife made from a traditional design, a bit like the new Beetle of Volkswagen inspired by the design of its ancester but very different in the conception and making. So, this knife is light in the pocket, it is very sharp (1095 carbon steel like old timer knives, easy to maintain sharp), the lockback is a safe system, I think it is strong. But I was expecting a true traditional knife from an old firm like Bear & Son... and finally, my hand prefers the feeling of my Case Sodbuster CV.

Pros: None
Cons: None
Most knives use stainless steel now but the old 1095 carbon steel will take a sharper edge, last longer, and is easier to resharpen. It does take some care as it will stain or rust. Further, many knives are made in overseas now while this knife is made in the U.S.A. It has a functional lock to save your fingers from accidental closings while in use. Had they been available, I would have purchased more.
