The 550-S30V Griptilian model features a flat ground CPM-S30V blade, round thumb-hole openers and an AXIS lock mechanism. CPM-S30V Stainless Steel
A premium steel created especially for knives, it is a powder steel creating uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties. As a blade material, it offers excellent corrosion resistance and superb edge qualities. This stainless steel is extremely well balanced, making it one of the best all-around choices for daily tasks.
AXIS Lock
A Benchmade original, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100 percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar that rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spans the liners and is positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar its inertia to engage the knife tang. As a result, the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

The PERFECT first knife for a kid
Don't get the wrong idea from the review headline. There's NOTHING "Mickey Mouse" about this knife. It's actually one of my favorite EDCs also. The Griptilian is no-frills, solid, and reliable, and performs as well as any other folding knife I have. But this is by far my # 1 choice for my son who's turning 10 in August and ready for his first pocket knife. It just checks off all the boxes for me:Reliable, safe, easy-to-use locking mechanism (Axis)Easy to open (round hole)Ambidextrous (Axis lock, round hole, tip-up clip can mount on either side)Easy to grip (textured Noryl GTX handles, jimping on blade and top of scales)Safe blade design (modified sheep's foot)Overall fit and finish are excellent, as with all Benchmade knives. Comes out of the box sharp. The knife is well-balanced in the hand, and the opening mechanism is smooth. S30V is a proven steel. I really can't find a negative. This is one of my all-time faves. The kid's gonna love it too.
