Description

CASS14118: No.10 SFK - 14C28N/Flat/Stabilized Curly Birch, Kydex

Casstrom Sweden

Featuring highly figured stabilized Curly Birch this knife is as beautiful as it is durable. Stabilized wood is treated in a vacuum chamber to impregnate the wood with a special resin that fills all of the voids in the wood. Once heated then finished this process makes the wood completely dimensionally stable with no chance to warp, shrink or crack. This process adds considerably to the cost of the wood but ensures you have a knife that could be handed down for generations to come.

This strong full-tang knife is built for versatile use during hunting, fishing and general use of the forest. It is a very sturdy knife you can skin a moose with, fillet a fish with as well as carve wood. The blade is 3.875" long and made of about 3.5 mm thick Sandvik 14C28N, a Swedish stainless steel developed specifically for knives (58-59 HRC).

The knife is sharpened with a Full Flat grind and has a satin finish. This steel, combined with the grinding, makes these knives very easy to cut with, effective for a variety of tasks, and maintain an edge well, but is still very easy to sharpen. This type of grind is not optimal for batoning and prying but rather optimized for efficient cutting due to the low angle and thinness behind the edge. To increase the strength, the secondary bevel needs to be sharpened back and the angle increased a little; however, for heavy use, we would recommend you choose a version with Scandi grind.

The knife comes with a sturdy sheath made from Kydex.

Pair with the Cognac Carabiner Dangler for a full-featured bushcraft rig. The Dangler keeps the sheath comfortable when moving in tough terrain and sitting down, while the innovative carabiner D-ring allows the knife and sheath to be removed quickly. The D-ring can also be used in several other ways if needed.

About Sandvik 14C28N Stainless Steel

Sandvik's most recently developed product in its popular series of knife steel. The optimized composition creates a steel with a unique combination of excellent edge holding features (stability, sharpenability, and sharpness), high hardness, and high corrosion resistance. This steel has the ability to be heat-treated so that the wear resistance is improved over prior steel types without affecting the microstructure. To sharpen the knife is therefore relatively easy, while edge stability in terms of chipping and edge rolling is still very good. Steel structure analysis: C 0.62%, Si 0.2%, Mn 0.6%, P 0.025%, S 0.01%, Cr 14.0%, N 0.11% (HRC 58-59).

Full Flat Grind

- A full flat grind features a flat bevel that travels from the spine of the knife to the edge with a small secondary bevel to form the sharpened edge. This grind is not as exceptionally strong overall as the scandi, but still suitable for most woodcraft activity. The advantage of the full flat is when cutting softer material such as prepping meals, skinning game, etc. The secondary bevel is also generally easier to maintain than the full v-grind of the scandi.

Buttery smooth and surprisingly good in-pocket carry w/Kydex sheath
Casstrom's fixed blades favor the Swedish vibe of belt-hanging leather sheaths for bushwhacking and camp carry. But that's not really practical for EDC of this mid-sized fixed blade like this No 10 size. With the Kydex sheath and a UtiliClip 3.3 slim clip, this knife blade fits in pocket nicely and the handle carries very comfortably under my day to day untucked skirt and fleeces of choice. Quick pulls from the sheath are easy with just the right amount of resistance so the knife otherwise stays put. The flat grind version's cuts are effortless and the steel is a beautiful consistent satin polish. And the smooth curly birch handle's feel in hand is, yep, you guessed it, like butter. Just a beautiful well-machined companion that kicked my large-ish EDC knife out of my pocket if that tells you anything. The con's are that the included lanyard leather isn't nearly as practical as a paracord lanyard. And the sheath-in-pocket carry approach won't really work for everyday use in the summer as that buttery handle is too obvious in shorts or with t-shirts. And deeper pocket or concealed carry would make extracting/inserting the knife w/the sheath tricky. Good excuse to buy a smaller more discreet "summer fixed blade" to complement this one! Or just go back to the EDC folder of choice. Time will tell on reliability so will see how it goes. Happily surprised with the experience thus far though.
