CJBJ1911ALC: Agave Flipper Knife, Aluminum

CJRB Cutlery

The Agave flipper combines a versatile profile with attractive aesthetics for a knife you will want to carry and use. Its size and shape allow it to excel at everyday carry type utility tasks and to protect your life in a pinch. The contoured aluminum handle provides an ergonomic hold under multiple grips while the compact flipper rockets the blade out each and every time. Speaking of the blade, it's a modified sheepsfoot design with a slight belly and a pointy tip for stabbing and puncturing holes. A small finger choil, reversible deep carry pocket clip, and lanyard hole are just icing on the cake at this price and we highly recommend you give the Agave a shot.

This knife is now being produced with AR-RPM9 steel, however, the original D2 version may still be shipping. If you have a specific steel preference, please include a note in the comments section at checkout for which steel you prefer. If we do not have the steel you prefer on hand, we'll contact you, otherwise, we'll email you the tracking number once your order ships.*

Stylish, Useful EDC
After about 25 years of carrying the same EDC knife, I recently decided it was time to give myself some daily options, and the CJRB Agave is one of many I chose, mainly due to its unique shape, but also because of the RPM-9 steel its blade is made from. I've had this knife for six months now, and it's become one of my favorite carry blades. I have found that RPM-9 it compares favorably to other budget blade steels, like AUS-8, 8cr, or 9cr18mov. It doesn't hold an edge forever, but does keep an edge reasonably well and sharpens easily to a very fine edge. In short, one really can't ask more from a budget EDC blade, but if you were to expect performance well beyond this price point, it's not likely to impress you much. It's a reasonably well-performing steel with perhaps a finer grain structure than you might find in other steels in knives in this price range. The blade shape is great. The first day I had the Agave, I used it for a garden hose repair, and all went as well as one could reasonably expect. Nice, clean, fast, even cut. Finger choil allows one to choke up easily, and the handle shape tucks nicely into the middle of the palm when the index finger is past the pivot, around the choil. Since then, I have carried this knife more often than some others, in no small part because it looks neat, and people tend to comment or ask questions when they see it. Not only is it a useful EDC, but it's a conversation starter. If there is any con to this knife, it is the slipperiness of the aluminum handles. A rougher texture, maybe the judicious use of some grip tape might help. Or, if you're into metal engraving (laser or manual), this knife would make a great candidate! Otherwise, a different handle material might be a better choice. This one could easily slip, so just be aware of that. Other than that, I am very pleased with the Agave. Action is great, recessed liner lock works perfectly. I am left handed and moved the carry clip over to the other side with no issues. No real complaints, but it can be slippery.

Interesting Blade Shape, Terrible Action and Ergonomics
The aluminum Agave featuers super slippery scales that are made even more difficult to hold onto due to the weird tapering at the butt of the knife. I love contoured micarta but with this rounded over aluminum it loses a lot of grip that even flat scales would have improved upon. This is the only CJRB I've had that consistently fails to open with the flipper tab (unfortunately due to the design geometry not fixable pivot tightness) and there are no thumb studs to deploy another way. I love CJRB and have tested a dozen or more models so far (their Denim Micarta Scoria is my #2 overall EDC) and this model has had the worst action of all of those. I thought the design would be endearingly unique but in reality it was uglier than pictured. Had to return due to overall dissatisfaction.

You will not regret it!
To start, I’m a beginner knife enthusiast and have little experience in the knife world. The Kershaw Decibel got me started, and this knife has me hooked! Knife Center’s video reviews are very informative catered with great presentation. The quick review was correct about this beautiful piece. Before, I was skeptical about knifes. The last 3 knifes I got weren’t what I absolutely wanted to rock as an edc. Then came along the Agave. The CJRB Agave, in my opinion, set the bar of what a true edc and or just a good knife should be. Good looking, confidence inspiring, and relatively affordable. If you’re worried about the aluminum handles (scales) being slippery, don’t. There’s plenty of grip. The scales are curvy and the material is manufactured well. It’s very similar to the metal rails on an iPhone 11. The matte kind, not the shiny ones. All in all, this knife is definitely worth a look if you want something organic, raw, and natural feeling along with the other 3 good knife basics I listed above. Plus the liner lock is done right, finally! I do have to say, the centering is a little off and the quality is too (mine has micro stains and a tiny scratch, my eyes are like a microscope by the way). Anyway, this is a must buy! Or at least worthy of a try!
