Designed by celebrated custom knife maker Andrew Demko, the Spartan is one of Cold Steel's most popular folding knives. The Spartan's super-sharp stonewashed blade is made from Japanese AUS-10A stainless steel and was designed to echo the aesthetics and cutting performance of the world famous Kukri. Its distinctive Kopis-inspired handle is precision injection molded out of Griv-Ex with heat treated steel liners, and this, in addition to Cold Steel's famous Tri-Ad lock, makes for a knife that is incredibly safe and secure. The Spartan also features the patented Demko thumb plate, which can be used to open the knife like a conventional "one handed opener" or be snagged on the edge of a pocket during the draw stroke and opened at lightning speed!
Zytel Handles
A nylon polymer that is lightweight and extremely durable, Zytel can be shaped and textured to provide excellent grip.
Pocket Clip
Includes a pocket clip for easy accessibility and a more secure carry.
Lockback
The lockback system has been used for many decades. It can usually be found on the knife spine and it provides a strong lockup that will wear well.
AUS-10 Stainless Steel
A dependable and solid performer, this Japanese-made stainless steel features well rounded attributes for most applications.
Sadly the Spartan is no longer the beast that it once was. I purchased this one as a back-up to the original Spartan that I picked up a couple of years ago. (2 is 1 and 1 is none) The new version *looks* almost identical, but they are really two different animals. The new version is a full 1 oz. lighter. It lacks the same authority in the hand of the original. When you pick up the original you immediately get that satisfying feeling of a solid, well balanced knife, that just wants to slash/chop/pierce whatever material is in its path. It has the proper mass to assist in the usage of the blade. The new Spartan just feels like ...a knife. The original though well balanced and comfortable, is built like a tank and can take unbelievable amounts of punishment. The new Spartan? I would not feel confident enough to put it through the same sort of abuse. Gone is the hollow grind blade. (The images on KnifeCenter are not updated, and no longer correct) It is now a full flat grind. The blade stock is thinner, and the distal taper is more aggressive. The swedge grind on the false edge is far more aggressive as well. This thins down the spine of the knife significantly more than the robust original. It's just not the Lynn Thompson/Andrew Demko beast that it used to be. Another fallen brother from the Cold Steel legacy.
The Spartan Cold Steel knife is awesome. This blade is the right size at 4.5 inches that feels comfortable. The signature Tri-Ad lock from cold steel is reliable. There are sheaths that can accommodate knives of all sizes which is an option but these folders come with pocket clips. The Spartan knife also makes for a handy tool, can be used as a every day carry, and is a excellent choice for personal self defense protection. There are plenty of videos online that show what Cold Steel is all about and I’m impressed. There is the Espada blade that is also from Cold Steel that comes in at 7.5 inches. The Spartan Cold Steel knife should have another version made at 7.5 inches as well. The fit and finish of the Spartan is unlike any other knife. The Spartan is just cool to have and if you collect knives.
Ive always liked the greek kopis and seeing it in a strong folder like this is one of theost beautiful things i can think of. You get a great dependable bada** looking blade and with a little time you can even get some good deployment out of your pocket like with most big cold steels.
