Description

CS88CLMD: Colichemarde Dagger

Cold Steel

This listing is for the Colichemarde Dagger (CS88CLMD). The Colichemarde Sword (CS88CLMS) is sold separately and can be found here.

The Colichemarde emerged on the sword scene in the late 1600's during the decline of the Rapier and the rise of the small sword. Its long suit was its uniquely shaped blade that was extra wide at the forte then stepped down or narrowed for the rest of its length before ending in a wicked point. The advantage of this configuration was it allowed the sword to be used to parry or oppose even the heaviest weapons without breaking, yet remain light and supple enough to take full advantage of its lightning quick point.

Cold Steel president Lynn C. Thompson has long been an admirer of the Colichemarde due to its great versatility in attack or defense so we enlisted the aid of our good friend Dave Baker, and made our own modern interpretation.

True to form, our blade mirrors the original design concepts with an extra long and wide forte that abruptly tapers down to an acute and deadly point. The hilt features a decorative, yet highly functional, double shell guard, complete with finger loops and knuckle bow, while the grip is completely wire wrapped and capped with a matching pummel.

Additionally, we have also taken the liberty of creating a matching dagger with a stiff, beautifully ground and polished blade, double quillions, and wire wrapped handle.

Just a little too cheap and tacky
Typically I like Cold Steel's weapons. They are a bit tasteless but they are real weapons, not wall decorations. I actually have two of their European daggers - the Italian Dagger and the rondel - and they are both excellent. Cold Steel has a certain reputation, but it's very hard to find acceptable old-style European blades under $1000.This one is just too cheap, like something from a sleazy Ren faire. The problem is the handle is pure decoration, using some sort of bottom-barrel alloy. I will grant that the wrap looks nice and is probably where all the cost went. But if you actually tried to block a blow with this thing, your opponent would shear right through the quillions.Look, I am not planning on getting in a dagger fight, and if you pulled out this particular dagger in a modern fight you'd deserve to shot. Of course it's decorative. But this one is too cheap for re-enactors. It's just not a viable weapon. Some nice things: the weight and balance are fun in hand, the scabbard wasn't too bad, and the steel on the blade actually seems fine. Good enough anyway. There were some burrs but it cleaned up after a quick stropping. Shame the blade is attached to a cheap hunk of tin.
