Helle

In order to perfect the design of this knife, Helle traveled to the raw, remote and overwhelmingly beautiful country of Romania to work alongside Les Stroud. Helle and Les Stroud are extremely proud of this knife and its potential; in fact the word Mandra literally translates to proud. This well designed fixed blade has a 2.5" drop point blade that utilizes and neat polished finish. The curly birch handles are designed to remain useful whether it is wet or dry. The Helle Mandra is made in Norway and comes with a leather sheath.

Maintenance

Helle knives are designed to retain their sharpness as a lifelong outdoors companion. But it is still important to take care of your knife and its sheath.

The Handle - Dry the handle with a soft cloth if wet and wax occasionally.

The Sheath - The leather needs to be impregnated occasionally with colorless impregnation agent (grease or wax) to keep supple. Dry the sheath carefully in room temperature if it becomes wet

The Blade - Wipe the blade with a soft cloth if wet and treat with grease occasionally.

Sharpening

Use a diamond tool or a wet stone for sharpening. Place the knife bevel flat to the sharpening tool and work the entire blade. Work one side until you can feel a slight burr on the opposite side. Switch side and repeat the procedure until you feel the burr on the first side. You have now established an edge.

Remove the burr by stroking the blade gently over the sharpening surface on both sides, as if cutting very thin slices. Keep the bevel flat towards the sharpener and move from side to side until the burr is gone.

If the blade is very dull or damaged, use a fine-grained grindstone and plenty of water and sharpen until you have a raw edge. Use much cooling liquid and never sharpen on a dry stone. A hot-ground edge looses its heat treatment and ruins the blade.

extremely uncomfortable strangely shaped handle. Very pretty purposefully picked wood but pokey angles on handle needed to be reshaped and sanded - dunno if that was intentional or not. 3-3.5 finger grip shaped for a full 4 fingered babies hand? blade grind came uneven(but very sharp!). sheath is comfy, button clasp is sturdy but stitching is falling apart and belt loop is about sliced in half after a week of carry. came with dried gobs of shellac or something inside the brass rings. bought this on sale for 147.00 and i feel i still overpaid - shes a fixer upper! out of the "tube" it honestly felt like a 50-70 dollar knife. don't buy this one

Great knife, small package
After a long search for a neck dangler I came across this knife. Helle has a great reputation for quality knives. This knife did not disappoint me. Great fit in my medium-large hand. I hardly know when it is hanging around my neck due to low weight. While the handle finish is different than larger Helle knives, it is well made, has great curvature so it fits your grip. Don't be fooled because it appears less fancy than most Helle products. The two hollow rivets thru the handle allow it to be attached to a staff to create a long reach cutting tool. The laminated blade exterior stainless protects the higher carbon cutting steel core blade from corrosion and is easy to clean. The full tang construction adds to the handle strength and helps provide good balance to the knife. The sheath can also be used via the belt loop, although the knife's overall low weight makes it easy to forget you are wearing it so I prefer the neck leather straps. Hope I never lose this knife, but if I do, I will buy another. Best quality neck knife I've owned.

Helle Mandra
I feel the product in no way lives up to the Helle knives I have purchased in the past. My prior Helle knives were of the highest quality, but the Mandra wood to metal fits are less than good.
